Quite a few guys picking up eye's with the bottom tail fin "clipped" slightly. They said it did not shorten the length of the fish, but appeard to be marked with the cut. Any ideas why? I recall reading many years ago that some fish were marked that way, but I can't recall why or even if it was on the way out of practice at that time.

Can you shed any light on the subject?

During our spring and fall shocking effort, we clip a fin. This year we did a basal caudal notch, where we take a triangular clip out of the bottom of the tail. When we go back to do our recapture run, we count the number of fish with a notch and without, put those numbers in a formula, and that's how we estimate the population. We also measure the fish, and either take scales or a spine from the dorsal fin, so we can find out what the growth rates are for that particular fishery. All this information is used to calculate harvest regulations.
