Based on years of using GoodYear marathons on many different trailers ( Boat, ATV, snowmobile and travel trailers) I now only buy Maxxis ST tires. Once Goodyear switched manufacturing of their Marathons ST tires to China, nothing but problems!

I went with Maxxis tires on most of my trailers now and love them. If you look out on the RV.Net boards and other boat forums, all great reports coming in on the Maxxis ST trailer tires. Right now, I don't know of a better ST trailer tire on the market than the Maxxis. The only complaint I've heard about Maxxis is their availability in some areas of the country. If you ask a good tire dealer for Maxxis and they don't carry them, Maxxis will ship to them in a couple of days or you can order them direct from the Maxxis web site.

Ordered some for my trailer early last year directly from Maxxis. I did a bunch of research...Maxxis came out on top. They really seem to have the best reputation out there..plus a decent warranty. I'm convinced I'll be staying with them unless their quality changes.

Would highly recommend them to you.

I'm another longtime Marathon user but will switch to Maxiis if GY doesn't clean up their act. I wonder if Goodyear is paying any attention to what's happening? The people on this site will be the first to note the change in performance and also the first to change to another brand that will deliver the goods.

This is ironic, just 10 minutes ago I ordered new Maxxis. Did the research and they will be replacing the new GY marathon china bombs.

I looked the the boat trailer tires today, not good.
Time for new tires, besides they are seven years old.
I was thinking of Goodyears but I hear nothing but bad news about them.
What has happened to them, besides being made in China?
Maxxis are made in Taiwan. I don't have any Maxxis dealers by me.
Is there any trailer tires made in America?
I need F78-14st.

Well that didn't get any response.
So, I will re-post.
Looking for new tires for my trailer.
Any good ones and any made in America?
Thanks :)

Kliph, I got the Maxxis tires. From the research I did they seem to have the best rep. Hard to find trailer tires actually made in the USA.

Hi,

I just went with the MAXXIS Load Range E 10-ply tires for the trailer for my PRO-V.

They have a great warranty and my dealer got them in a couple days. It's the only trailer tire they recommend now.

10 ply??? you must be one of the very few people that have 15in trailer tires under your boat? unfortunatly the cast majority of us are limited to C rated 1760lb 14in tires, and that really sucks!

"majority of us are limited to C rated 1760lb 14in tires"

I just ordered Maxxis and C range was all that was offered unless I wanted to buy new 15" rims. I have used Marathons on all my trailers (I have 3) for years and years but lost a tire each of the last 2 years and decided I no longer wanted to pay a premium for a questionable product.

Hope I didn't make a mistake as I have always insisted on D range tires on all my trailers. Time will tell. Kuhmo offered a D load tire but I would have have to go down from 215 to 205 size in order to get them. Just isn't much out there to choose from. My brother has had good luck with his Denman trailer tires (made in Ohio) but when I went to buy those I found out they have closed their doors.

Here's hoping the Maxxis are all they are cracked up to be.

Plano,
Take the time and compare the diameter and load rating of the 215 Marathon, vs the 205 Kumho. You'll see that the Kumho is actually slightly larger in diameter, and has a greater load capacity. The difference is that the 857 is an "80" series width tire, vs. the "75" of the Marathon. So yes, they are slightly narrower, but that's it.

HRG:

I probably should have sent you a pm asking for your opinion as you are usually up on all this technical stuff that I don't understand. Finding someone knowledgeable on trailer tires at a dealer is not that easy....... they usually sing the praises of whatever they sell.

Part of my size confusion stems from purchasing 6 motorhome tires where wheel width prohibited me from changing tire size. So, I don't know if changing to "Eutropean Aspect" tires requires a different width wheel or not. I had considered the Kuhmo to get the additional D range/load/speed superiority but then decided I had better stay with the original size.

Based upon this board, I chose Maxxis and ordered them yesterday. I'll call the dealer and see if we can switch to the Kuhmos if you think the tire/rim combo will be ok. Hopefully he can make the change and they have them in stock. If not, I'll hope for the best with my C rated Maxxis.

As always, I appreciate your input.

Plano,
I do not know what width wheels you have, so see if you can find a width stamped on them. Looking at the comparison below, the 857 can use a 5.5 to 6.5" wide wheel.

HRG:

How do you measure width? Is it inside rim edge to inside rim edge? I probably should take off a tire and measure so I know. If my Ranger has 7" rims, then it looks like I have to go with the 215 vs the 205. Am I interpreting that correctly?

yes sir, inside width is where the bead to bead would contact.

Just put Maxxis on my tandem trailer, so far so good. Made to Erie and back. Got them at Discount tire, had to order them to a store and pick them up.

My 2006 Lund/Shoreland'r came with Maxxis tires on the trailer and they have been great for me. I put between 5,000 and 8,000 miles on my trailer per year and the tires are still in excellent condition. I have considered replacing them only due to age, and when I do they will be Maxxis tires again.

Put the Maxxis 215 75 r 14 on Saturday. Fingers crossed....... As an aside, when we took off the Marathon's 1 tire was starting to peel the tread....... stroke of luck that it didn't let go. Lot's of tread, but also lots of age.
