Just purchased a bow mount trolling motor from Reeds on closeout and have a couple questions.

Forgive my stupidity if these questions are dumb.

Do I need to intall some kind of an inline fuse between the motor and the battery. If so, how big of fuse?

Should I put the trolling motor battery up in the front of the boat or just run wires back to the back? Will it affect the power if the wires are longer?

Thanks in advance.

I am assuming alot here but say for instance you purchased a standard Minn Kota motor in a 12VDC version. You typically are going to need to use the following to install:

(1) No smaller than 40 amp in-line fuse, recommend a 50A automatic breaker instead.
(2) You can install the battery in the back of the boat but depending on what size motor it is, the guage of cable should be no less than 6 awg and should be a marine grade wire. This can be purchased at Cabela's or any other marine dealer.
(3) Use marine grade splice kits (the kind of connectors with a silicon fill) to avoid corrosion at splice points.) Also can be ordered from Cabelas or other marine store suppliers.

Don't skimp on wire or type of cable connectors or you will have corrosion with a possible fire hazard after time.

Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, make sure you put the fuse at the battery instead of the motor. That way if something goes wrong between the battery and the trolling motor, the fuse will help eliminate any fire hazards.
