View Full Version : AGM for starting battery?
Wondering who is using AGM's for starting. I'm tired of pulling the battery every winter and I'm looking for a maitenance free battery. I was looking at Cabelas group 24. Anybody have opinions on this?

I don't know much about the Cabela's AGM batteries...was looking at them briefly before I purchased my Sears Diehard Platinums. I was concerned with some of the negative reviews about lack of performance and terminal problems on the Cabela's...but they have some awesome customer service should a guy ever have a problem and would send a new battery out pretty quickly.
I bought the group 34M for my starter and two 31M for my trolling motor. The company that makes the Platinum makes the Oddysee battery...of which I have two in my pickup. Those oddysee's are nearly five years old and have performed flawlessly.
One thing to keep in mind....these AGM's are very heavy batteries! My starting battery is 55 lbs. The two trolling batteries weigh 75 lbs a piece.
Good Luck...with what ever brand AGM battery you go with. I have been very impressed with AGM batteries and look forward to having them in my boat.

Why would you pull the battery every winter?

I used to pull them everyone winter... man was that dumb! This year, I was having some other work done and the dealership, and they winterized everything for me, including disconnecting one lead from each of the batteries, and recommended that I leave them in (they were charged when I dropped off the boat). Put them on the charger and they're perfect...

I think there is the concern that a lead / acid ( wet ) battery might freeze...especially if it is down on charge. But..You probably already knew that...sorry if you did. AGM's don't freeze....or if they do...it has to be much colder than for a lead / acid ( wet ) battery.

I pulled the batteries cause I was trying to be safe and not sorry. I have a Dual Pro charger for my trolling batteries but nothing connected to my starting battery. You hear that agm's won't freeze but you don't hear much about lead acid.
If your lead/acid battery is fully charged, it will not freeze. Just pull the wires off the negative post and you'd be good to store for the winter. The cold actually slows down the self discharge that happens, to almost nil.
