Can a jack plate be used on a 1850 Crestliner Sportfish with
a 25 inch transom and a 175 Yamaha Vmax ? Is there any great benefit to adding one to this type of boat?

Suzuki, I have used a Panther Dual Action jackplate on a older 690 Ranger Fisherman (flat transom) w/175hp. Mariner. It gave me a little more speed 2-5 mph. It did give me better controll of the boat in rough water and also stopped the boat from porpoising. I was able to get into shallow water without a problem. I have sold the boat but kept the jackplate it is for sale I would it go for $350.00. If interested or have any questions about the jackplate send me an E-mail at kevin.dahl@usoil.com

I have used a jackplate for the past 8 yrs. I reccommend using a manual setback plate. The reason for this, is it is too easy to overlift the motor, and blow your powerhead. It only takes a few seconds, and the engine is toast. No warrenty will cover that.

I suggest you check out the Cook setback plate, use a 4 1/2 inch setback, and the advantage, is you tweek your motor height, but stay within safety performance levels. They are very easy to adjust, just loosen 4 nuts, reach under eninge and use the adjustment nut to either raise or lower the engine. Takes about 5 minutes to make an adjustment. This is the safe way, and once adjusted to proper height, just lock it in, and forget it.

I think they have a website, or check with your dealer. Make sure you get the one piece model, that is manual ajustable.

Hope this helps,

I have a jackplate question also. I just read in a magazine about all the benifits of using jackplates, one of them is to get the motor further away from the back of the boat. If this is such an improvement in motor performance, why don't the manufactuers do this from the start? Just curious.
