I was on my way home from work this morning when the news report gave the story of a guy from Wisconcin who was hunting deer on lake of the woods (canadian side) this last hunting season.
Evidently he chased a deer off an island into the lake and when the deer started swimming away he shot at it and missed. So he proceeded to run the deer over with his boat. the report said the deer was injured but didn't confirm if he bagged the deer.
The judge gave the guy 10 days in jail and a huge fine and banned him from hunting in canada for 4 years. I thought they said the guy was 56 years old so you would think he would have some idea of right and wrong and guilt for his actions.

You would think so, but many nice and "ordinary" people turn into knotheads when it comes to hunting or fishing. Ethics and common sense be d***ed as long as they get their bird/duck/deer/fish....

Punishment fits the crime, I think. That should give him some time to think about his actions.:stick:
Nice to know there are judges willing to actually punish game and fish violators...seems there are so few willing to do it.

The story in the Kenora news. It was not the only one in the paper in Thunder Bay this week. Someone shot a doe and fastened antlers on to it with screws to bring the animal back home.. He made the paper as well. He was a local. Must be something in the water.....
A Wisconsin man’s unorthodox hunting technique, which had him combine a firearm and powerboat engine propeller to take down a deer, earned him 10 days in jail.
Justice of the Peace Roger McCraw sentenced Philip Borofka, 56, of Marshfield, Wis., to 10 days in jail in addition to more than $10,000 in fines in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kenora, on March 5.
Borofka has also been suspended from hunting in Ontario for seven years. The boat, owned by a third party, and Borofka’s firearm will be returned once his fines are paid.
Kenora District conservation officers say a hunting party forced a deer from Cochrane Island of Lake of the Woods into the water Oct. 20, 2008. They say Borofka shot at the swimming deer, ran over it in the boat and shot it again.
Borofka told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the charges are "exaggerated" and "absurd." He says he's working with lawyers to figure out his next steps.

If this truely happened then the only reason the charges and fines are out of line per the offender is because he got caught.
That is really the way to show respect for your quarry.
I would question if this guy could adhere to a slot limit or bag limit if he was alone.
Ethics are doing the right thing even if no one is there to whitness .... Nothing to do with laws.

I'm glad to see the large fine. To bad they didn't ban him for life from hunting & fishing Canada.

While I don't get very excited by people who have one or two fish over their limit in most cases, I do have a problem with people who do $hit like that, while not a peta member, running a animal over with a boat is inexcusable, ya banned for life works for me, and if he's caught again, consider it a felony and 10 to 20 years.

Last winter on Lake Geneva in Wis, a couple of snowmobilers ran down and killed a bunch of geese sitting on the ice. Some people are just plain idiots.
he should have recieved at least a year in jail and a much stiffer fine, also banned for life from hunting anything anywhere. That was not hunting but absolutely inhumane.
