Does anyone use a powered oil pump to remove the old oil from their outboards? I love my Yamaha 150 four-stroke...but the oil drain plug is in such a location that it can make a real mess when you remove it to change the oil. I thought a pump might be easier and cleaner by just running the hose into the dipstick tube. Also, I thought one might be nice to have around the garage for other projects (snowblowers, lawnmowers, etc.). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Stcroix,
Although pumps can work, it is not possible to get everyting out of the crankcase with a pump.
Rather than worring about a pump, design and fabricate a funnel and drain hose to take care of the mess when changing the oil.
I bit of thought and fabrication will take care of the problem.
You can purchase oil pumps from various vendors to pump oil if you want.
A very simple example is the squeeze bulb pump used on some of the older oil injected 2-stroke motors. Or you can go up to a gear driven rotary pump for more $$.

When you change the oil to get the most out of the motor you must activate the trim on you're motor from top to bottom.
When you change you're oil filter put some oil in the new (not full) let the oil penetrate the "filter paper" you will be surprise on the quantity that goes in the paper and after you pour a little in the filter and screw the oil filter in place; you're motor won't run without oil for some seconds.

I made a funnel and an adapter to fit a 3" piece of garden hose like Rew suggested and this worked OK but is in the way of getting the drain bolt out. I have seen people trim all the way down and wrap Saran wrap around the lower unit and that may work OK too. I finally made a 2" high 24" x 24" drain pan that I put under the lower unit, trim the motor all the way past vertical then turn the motor just a little bit and most of the oil will miss the lower unit. I still have to clean up a little but that only takes a few paper towels and a couple minutes.
I use to have an I/O and had to pump the oil and could never get all the old oil. I would change oil and filter and run the motor for 5 minutes and when I check the oil level I could see the oil was all ready turning color. Probably not enough old oil left to hurt any thing but just bothered me so I don't pump unless I have to.
