What's the verdict on this motor? It looks like it has more cubic inches than other 75hp motors. Does this motor slow down enough to make a good motor for backtrolling? Looking for the good, the bad and the ugly on this motor.

I looked at this for my 1725 Pro Guide. I think the 115, 90 and 75 are the same motor with a Merc 4 stroke. I did not want the extra weight and it looked huge in comparison to the Yamaha. Went with the Yamaha.

Work with a guy that has a Merc 75 4s tiller on a Lund. Motor runs nice but smokes a lot. Merc and the dealer have been less than helpful as they can't figure out why and won't replace the motor under warranty(according to him). They just keep trying to fix it with no positive results.

I looked at three of the 75 hp motors last summer: Yamaha EFI, Merc EFI, and Evinrude Etec. Dave is right, those Mercs are HUGE! Very tall and very heavy.
If you google search Veradito and Merc, you will find that they are the same block and similar internals to the lower HP Verados, but without the sexy supercharger. So a very stout motor with very strong internals, but also one that is probably over engineered for it's output.
If you put this on a 16 foot boat, I'd be very wary of weight. My 75 Yam makes my boat pretty stern heavy and honestly is too heavy as is. 400 lbs for Merc, 369 for Yamaha, and 320 for Etec. I eliminated the Merc first for size and weight, but had a tough time between Yam and Etec. In the end I eliminated the Etec because it was an inline 3 (don't idle quite as smooth as inline 4), it will not troll down as slow, and I hadn't heard as much about them as the Yamaha's. Weight and low end punch would really be advantages to the Etec though.
All that being said, I have not heard anything bad about the Merc. If my hull was rated for a 115, I would have given it a stronger consideration.
