View Full Version : 2003 tracker tundra 18WT with 135 optimax
I am thinking about buying a 003 tracker tundra 18WT with 135 optimax and would like to know if this motor is underpowered for this boat. I am thinking of putting a kicker on it also.
If anybody has had this boat do you have any comments? I am looking for used owner experience not somebody boat bashing without owning the boat.
Thanks

That boat will do mid 40's with that motor. The 135's are pretty comparable to the 150's. Should be plenty, and they are good motors.

As post before, the 135 is a good choice for a boat that size. The 135 /150/175 v6 share the same block and etest reports show the 135 consistently produces more power than its is rated at( usually about 140-145 hp)
As for the boat, ... no comment

I have the 03 SC version with a 125 merc. With my 22" ballistic I can get 45 gps. Normal fishing mode with full load I run a 21" ballistic and get about 40-42 gps. With the 135 you have it will run abit faster.

I had an 04 18 Tundra and was not happy with this boat. The older versions had a short 22 inch transom and would take alot of water over the transom when coming off plane or trolling with the wind. I did love the rough water ride, storage and layout of the boat but all the negatives far outweighed these. My hull folded in rough water at a year old.

What is that boat rated for?

What is that boat rated for?
175hp
My 04 would run 52 mph with a 175 opti, 9.9 and a tourney load

I have a 07 Mr. Pike 17 with a 135 Opti and I get 51 on the GPS . That is with two guys, 1/2 tank of gas and gear. I've been real happy with the motor.

I am looking at the same boat with a 90 ho 4 stroke? Seems small, but will it do 40 mph? that's all I'm looking for...

The boat would be a "DOG" with the 90hp motor - WAY under-powered. C-man

That's what I think too. I am going to test it out anyway. I will be happy if it hits 40 mph, like my current 17 foot boat with a 90 hp. The tracker only weighs 300 pounds more, so maybe it'll be OK.
The price is right, so maybe...

open up the back access hatch on the port side next to the motor and look at how the transom corner is formed and all the welds there it takes to make the curved corner and look at the way the transom is braced at the motor and how thin the transom itself is.
then do a search on Tracker warranty issues
My buddy had one and it had all kinds of problems, Tracker finally replaced the boat with a newer one.
the area i described is made totally different on the replacement hull and its been a fine boat.
I am almost positive his was a 2003...his is a 21ft so it may be a different animal but look into it carefully

I agree with the comments on the 135 opti... I have never heard anything bad about them. In fact, I've really only heard great comments about them. The Tracker boat on the other hand is just the opposite. It seems to get the most bashing from people... fit and finish at the Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee, Il is disappointing (at least to me) to say the very least on all of their boats. Very little attention to detail. If the price is right, perhaps there is a reason for such a great price. Check carefully and good luck...
