FOR THE RECORD:
I would like to respond to all of you out there who have had hook breakage problems with the Odd?Ball Jig. First of all, we would like to acknowledge to you that the problem is real and that we take full responsibility.
THE PROBLEM:
We discovered last year that we received a bad batch of hooks from our supplier VMC. It is important to emphasize here that it appears to be only one batch. The Jigs that are affected are the 1/4 and 3/8 sizes.
The problem hook we are dealing with here is a high-tech, high carbon hook. If over heat-treated during the hardening process these hooks can become brittle. Unfortunately this is exactly what happened with this batch of hooks. Believe me guys when I tell you, this is a jig manufacturers worsted nightmare and it happens to all of us from time to time.
As a point of interest Odd?Balls are patented and do not use a generic stock hook. Odd?Ball hooks are made from scratch, specifically to fit an Odd?Ball. These hooks are not available to those who like to cast their own jigs (sorry guys).
THE SOLUTION:
In the final analysis we have abandoned the VMC hook. We think the hook lacks reliability. We have switched to Mustad and they are manufacturing the Odd?Ball Hook using ACCU-POINT metallurgy. This technology produces a tough high performance hook, with a long-standing record of outstanding reliability and quality.
CONTACT US FOR REPLACEMENTS:
Unlike automobiles and refrigerators, jigs do not have serial numbers, making it impossible for us to contact you or do any type of recall. However, if you contact us, we will replace the defective jigs in your tackle box FREE. When we first discovered the problem we were asking anglers a series of questions. That was done initially to give us the feedback we needed to solve the problem. At this point we know all we need to know about the defective VMC hooks. We have replaced every jig for every person who has contacted us and will continue to do so. IMPORTANT: Please contacts us directly as local dealers and mass merchants are not able to extend this guarantee.
The good news in all of this is that I have yet to talk with an angler who has lost a fish to a broken hook. Apparently the hooks do not break when the fish is in the water. Breakage occurs when the fish can get leveage on the hook, when flopping in the net or when the hook is extracted with a tool. I have also had reports of breakage on snaggs particularly with fireline. If anyone has additional questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at Bait Rigs Tackle Co. We thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Sincerely Yours,
Joe Puccio
