I have a Johnson 9.9 with a small looking prop. I know that the merc big foot and yamaha's T8 have bigger props. My questions are what performance differences between my motor and the other two. Is my motor set up for a certain type of fishing. I fish mostly structure in northern Mn. so when the water is rougher I will back troll. I just bought the boat. thanks for any education.

You should look into what props are available for your motor. In most cases a larger diameter lower pitch (smaller # means lower pitch) prop will serve you better than high pitch small diameter props. Also more blades are generally preferred. Low pitch large dia. and more blades = more bite (thrust) from your motor. The stock props are generally better suited if a small motor is the primary motor and it is used at or near full throttle, such as to power a small row boat. Those props do not do well on large boats where they are used for trolling (forward or backward) at much lower RPM's. On my Merc. 9.9 4-stroke, I went from a 3 blade 9 pitch to a larger diameter 4 blade 6 pitch and have been able to troll slower, with better response to throttle (due to less prop slip) and better steering control. The only down side is a loss of a few 1/10th of a MPH at full throttle (I went from 5.9mph to 5.6mph), no big deal though as I don’t need to troll those speeds anyway!
