I just noticed a screw was loose and stripped on the tranducer on the stern of the boat below the water line where it is mounted. What's the best way to fix this and do I need to add some sort of sealant in the screw hole?

Some options:
- if you have access to the screw hole from inside the boat, change from a screw to a bolt with locking nut.
- if not, use a larger screw and don't overtighten.
No matter what, always use sealant on a hull-penetrating fastener below the waterline!

and don't use just any silicone sealant. Not all are rated for under-waterline use. Use 3M #4200 or #5200, Home Depot sells it in the paint department. As well as most marine stores.

If you have an aluminum boat and you can get acess from the inside. Use a flat rubber washer on the inside if a bolt is used.Like Hot Runr Guy said use marine sealant and plenty of it. pull out the old bolt or screw and use the next larger size in stainless steel. the stainless steel will tighten up into the softer aluminum.what could have happen is the original hole was drilled to big. I used two bolts with S/S nylon lock nuts on the inside with marine sealant. It was a wille adjustable Transducer mount plate. That was 14 years ago no leaks.I have also put tranducer plates on two friends boats with no complaints.
However i do recommend the 3M brand marine sealant i know it is not made in china like everything else. If your boat is fiberglass i do not have an answer.
Do yourself a favor and remove the transducer entirely, repair the holes with sealed screws or rivets, then install a transducer mounting board so you don't have these problems in the future. I use the 12" x 18" board mounted vertically with all the boards screws installed above the waterline into the reinforced part of the transome. You want to use a liberal amount of 3M sealant around the entire boartd perimeter to prevent water and scum from getting behind it. Then you can mount all the transducers you want without ever worrying about leaks again.

KP has it right. A transducer mounting board solves many problems, some of which are as yet unanticipated.

If you decide to put a transducer mount on.This is the mount i had on my previous boat for 14 years with no problems. Wille 2945 permanent transducer mount.I prefer this mount because it is adjustable. you can slide the transducer left or right. This mount holds two transducers.Once the two holes are drilled for installation you never have to drill holes again even if you change units or tranducers.
