I`m thinking of getting some planer boards. I was wondering what type of rod reel setup will be best for planer boards? I have never used planer boards before.
I been thinking of Diawa sealine reels to use on my 8 foot walleye signature series rods. Thinking of Church Wally boards, the Mark Martin ones.
I don`t know if I pointed in the right direction or not? I also have downrigger rods. I`m thinking rigger rods maybe clumsy for planer boards.
What do you guys use?

Sounds like you are headed in the right direction. Daiwa Sealines are excellent reels. You will not be disappointed.
Boards are personal preference. Church or Off-Shore, flip a coin, both are good quality.
Rod choice sounds good. I like a 8'6" telescopic planer board rod. Your rigger rods will work too, if you decide to pull some Dipsy's.
Hope that helps,
Ray

I personally love the Off Shore board. I added the quick release and it is very fast and efficient. I know that it has put more fish in my boat with the quick release, rather than trying to pinch the standard release and possibly adding slack into the line (especially with wet hands). Tattle tail flags are nice also, especially if you are on big water. Trust me you will love the off shore board. Just a note, I am not on the Off Shore pro staff, so this comes as an unbiased testimonial.

Thank you!
I`ll have to stash away some $$$ and pull the trigger.
I`m certain on the Diawa sealines the 17 models.
The sealines are a quite a bit more that the accudepth but you get what you pay for.
I`ve also looked at Okuma magna pro`s but I think I`m biting the bullit on Diawa.

I'd get the 27's if I were you. They are more versatile than the 17's. They can be used for more applications and are the standard size for planer board fishing.
You are buying standard equipment at average prices. You are using what I started with. As I got more into it I moved up to better equipment (IMHO) but at double the price range than what you are getting.
There is no better reel out there than the Shimano Tekota line counter reel. The drag is absolutely unbelievable. I also use the Compre Trolling rods. These are so sensitive that they can be used for longline trolling applications. So I feel that in the long run I am saving money because I do not have to but two separate rods for different applications.

I agree with Sunshine on the 27's
Inline boards can pull a lot expeciially with a big fish on and it helps to have a reel thats a bit bigger in my opinion. I never thought of them being too big.

I should have waited to read more post and got the 27`s I already ordered the 17`s.
I could send them back to Cabela`s or just use them.
I looked at the 27`s and thought of them being too big.
Maybe next year I will get the Shimanos in the larger size.
On my spinning reels I been down sizing my reel size because of line over capacity.
I`m guessing the drag would be stronger in the 27 models? Hoping the 17s work.
I seem to waste a lot of line I don`t need.
I had this in mind when ordering the 17`s
Thanks again guys,

a lot of guys use the 17's wtih no problems.
as far as the line capacity, we just fill them using cheap mono as backing then spool the good stuff on top of that.
make sure your reels are full and check the counters for accuracy when done. Mark off 100ft on the sidewalk or wherever and check it against it.

Thanks perchjerker,
After reading sunshines and your post, I called Cabela`s back to change the order I placed earlier today. They told me it was too late that the order had been filled.
Glad to hear the 17s will do.
I always kick myself with the woulda coulda shoulda in hind sight..

I would mix brands of planer boards after a presentation I saw this winter. 2 off shores and 2 churchs. The reason being is that the offshores pull more so I would put them outside and the church's inside so that i can pull fish across the inside lines without tangles.
