View Full Version : RH crank baitcast reel wisdom?

(Note: Except for my Diawa LC's, I only own LH baitcasters.)

I've seen it so many times in videos or fishing shows - watch Al Lindner w/ a baitcast reel - he's always holding the rod in his right hand and reaching across to turn the handle w/ his left hand - even with a RH crank reel. Watch Fishing University - same thing. I've seen examples of it on almost every fishing show I've watched. Why do people continue to endure a backwards reel?

Which hand arm/would you rather set the hook with? Which arm do you want to cast with? I'm looking forward to the day when RH cranks are hard to find rather than the other way around.

I am left handed and I use right handed baitcasters. With lefties being the most discriminated minority in the universe, it is one advantage I have. Wouldn't trade the right handed baitcasters for anything. I cast with my left hand and retrieve with my right. If fishing high weeds, this advantage of not having to transfer the rod from one hand to the other is invaluable

I am with you steve, I HATE my linecounters that are 'right handed' but had no choice. Every thing else I own I reel with my left hand.

I'm with you Steve. Early on I taught myself to use left hand retrieve baitcasting equipment. For me this came out of necessity of contitions. I love throwing top water weedless buzzers into the reeds for pike. With a right hand retrieve I would have to make a flawless transfer of the rod or risk the bait sinking into the reeds and getting fouled. By teaching myself to use a left hand retrieve baitcasting reel I could cast with my right arm and reel with my left hand. The instant the bait hits the water I can engage the reel. I'll never understand why those "good ol' bass'n boys" don't see this as a benefit. Maybe us walleye guys are just a little smar... wait, I don't want to start a war :-)

Best Regards,

FJH

In essence, you agree. Cast & set the hook with your strongest and most agile hand/arm and reel with the other :-)
