I have an older 20 hp Johnson, that the starter cord only pulls out about 10-12 inches.
I have not hooked the fuel line up for fear of causing damage.
It sounds as though both pistons are moving.

Any ideas of what is going on?

pulled the plugs and the cord pulls just fine.
What is this telling me?
Thanks in advance.

mmmmm.......That you are a wimp....?
:) Couldn't resist. :)

Check your bolts on your starter assembly to make sure they are tight. If the assembly is loose it could bind up now and then when pulling the cord.??

now that you have taken the plugs out and tried, what do the plugs look like?

do they have any evidence of metal on them? Its possible that the cylinders are scored and the rings are hanging up under compression.

when was the last time it ran?

could also be its just dry as you have not hooked up the fuel line, thats where the motor get its lubrication from, the oil in the gas. Maybe try squirting oil in the cylinders, pull the cord with the plugs out to get it into the engine, put the plugs back in, cross you fingers and your toes and try pulling the rope again.

Really hard to diagnose over the internet

I did remove the plugs last fall and sprayed the cylinders down with WD40.
No signs of metal on the plugs.

Goldman give me a call, I need a haircut. :)
