I have the flags, but I have them permanently up. I have no problem reading my rods, even with a smaller junk fish, once in awhile one will get by me.

I like to tap bottom w/my lures to trigger a bite on the breaks ~ the spring loaded flags just drove me nuts :)

I use the tattle-tale feature when dragging harnesses. Its nice to be able to see when a fish hits and misses so that your not dragging an empty harness.
I set the flags tight when running cranks. Then I just read the boards.

I can read my boards fine without them
I just think they are fun to use. I get a kick out of seeing them go crazy when a fish is on

I have the flags
THere nice, helps with smaller fish
But there are times while trolling faster, I'll run no slack in the line to keep the flags up (baits are pulling them down)

when that happens I adjust the springs to apply more tension

I had them all the way out, In fact I drilled new holes trying to get more tenision
And the flags still ran half down

I run flags all of the time. Mine are set that when the flag pops straight up. It is fish on. an easy read when the inline boards are at a farther distance from the boat.

I got different springs that have more tension

I have the flag but I don't have the spring thingie to tell you a fish is on. I started using planer boards for stripers and when the board went backwards and underwater and my drag started going like crazy ... FISH ON!! LOL
For other smaller fish it takes some getting use to but usually I can tell there is a fish on. :)

Always use the flags, if you are pulling weights or cranks fast, draggging bouncers or high lining you can adjust the tension of the spring for this. If it still pulls the flag down you can put a slight tighten on the screw that holds the flag to the board. I'm talking maybe a 16th of a turn on the screw or so until the flag starts to tighten but remains free enough to fold under the pressure of a fish. Use the lighter settings to detect light biters and perch etc..
The flag folding up reminds me of when I was a kid,and now, watching a bobber go down. "Down right" exciting..................

I put different size rubber bands on the boards, by the springs to tune for different weights.
