What is the best lure and set-up to use when fishing the shallows for Yellow Bass, over spawning areas at Clear Lake?

I don't know about Clear Lake, but in S.W. Iowa, the D.N.R. has drained4 or 5 lakes because of yellow bass. Just a hook, and plastice grub will catch all you want. Doug

In Clear Lake a small jig, 1/32nd oz., with a minnow or piece of minnow is all that's necessary. You can fish it under a slip-bobber or just cast and slowly retrieve. That's when they're spawning.
When they're done spawning, troll with small crankbaits or spinners on the bottom until you find them, then anchor right on them. Once you find them, go to the tiny jig with the smallest Gulp! or Power Bait bodies.
Keep all the yellows you want, they're delicious and prolific.

Do yellow bass taste better than white bass? I would think they would taste about the same since they are so closely related.

Yellow bass are fantastic to eat. You can catch them using a small 1/16 th ounce jig and cut bait also.

If I remember right, it's usually late May or early June. I know I was on Clear Lake a couple of years ago during that time and they were very shallow spawning.
Anyone else have info on this?

It all Depends on water temps the preferred water temp for them to spawn is in the low 60 range witch is traditionally mid may. It will last several days though they all don't spawn at the same time. As for the white bass they i feel are good eating also but you do need to take the red meat out of them located down the lateral line. Two small cuts on each side of the line on the tail end and it will pull right out.I even do it to walleyes also. Good fishing,Tracy
