Bob, a friend recently gave me some Gulp Alive to try and I have a couple questions if you wouldn't mind.

Can you take original Gulp baits and put them in the Gulp Alive for extra "scent"?

Is the "juice" in all types of Gulp Alive the same?

The jar I got was the Emerald Shiners, but I was just wondering if I could throw some original Gulp crawlers in the bucket as well to try when running crawler harnesses on Erie this year. I honestly didn't have much luck with the Gulp crawlers out there last year when I tried them, but they are a couple years old I thought a dunk in some fresh juice might help.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

I have never had much luck luck with the gulp products myself. I think it has more to to with the way I am use to fishing. I was always taught to fish with Shad Raps, Old Mil and vodka ha ha. What have you got planned for fishing trips this next year. I am going to spend more time on Clear Lake and take at least one whole week at Lake Pepin this summer and explore some of the backwater areas that I don't get to when only there for the day or weekend.

Dave, don`t give up on GULP, it is good stuff.. Yes you can charge and recharge other Gulp or Power bait in Gulp Alive juice..I even do Minnow heads , eyeballs etc, even fresh killed minnows..Try using those emerald shiners on SLURP or MIMIC jig heads , those wire bait holders on jigs hold plastic and Gulp well. I have used the original gulp in the gulp alive liquid. It seems to soften the original gulp a bit. It is still stiffer than the gulp alive. If I am drop-shotting in clear water I prefer the gulp alive. If I am casting in current, I definitely prefer the original gulp, powerbaits, or the stretchy Strike King plastics. They will last much, much longer than the gulp alive (can be pretty soft and gets shredded easily). Now I'm starting to sound like an InFisherman infomercial (at least I'm not commenting on hollow-belly swimbaits every other sentence!).

I was very skeptical about Gulp Alive for some time. However, I have had some very good days on the water with the 3" minnows and minnow grubs. I have not had much luck with crawlers.

Smitty:

I am trying to get definitive info on the Gulp! and Gulp! Alive. I know what I think, but I want to get the best info I can. Sometimes I get in trouble when I think I know something.

Joe:

I have a trip scheduled to Leech Lake, Kabetogama, and Pepin. Pepin is always a favorite for me. Lots of fish, and lots of ways to catch them. Kab is outstanding also, and Leech has bounced back big-time.

Hope to spend more time on Clear Lake also. Did you see that 47" musky in the Globe Gazette that was caught and released in Clear Lake last week? That's how you get 50" muskies, you release 47" inchers. Congrats to Riley Finer for catching and releasing that guy. He caught it on his first cast of the year.

Thanks Bob.

Hey Joe, I know what ya mean about those old habits (only I've changed to Busch Lite these days).. :)

So far for planned stuff it's just a week with the guys on Lake Erie from May 2nd-9th and a week with the family up in the Perham, MN area in early August. I also want to get the chance to hit Clear Lake more this year and usually manage to grab a long weekend at Pepin with the boys and if lucky another long weekend up in MN in late Sept / early Oct with just Dad and I to finish off the year.

When you get up to Pepin you'll have to look Duane up. Now that he's old and retired he spends most of the summer at the city campground in Bay City (Wisconsin side just across the bridge from Redwing). Not hard to find him on the water, he'll be trolling raps on Maiden Rock until later in the year when he hits shoreline areas between there and the camp ground. He's running a blue '07 Fisherman.

Not giving up on the Gulp products, just curious on putting the crawlers in the shiner bucket as we really don't do any jigging when we go to Erie. We're generally a few weeks late for that and we mostly troll cranks or drift w/ bouncers & crawler harnesses.

I hadn't seen the musky pic, I'll have to check that out. It seems like I catch at least one every year on CL trolling Shad Raps for eyes later in the year, but nothing over about 36" so far.

Guys
Bob asked if I would chime in on the bagged Gulp into the Gulp Alive containers. Yes you can but don't leave it there for a long time. The bagged Gulp is not designed to stay in liquid but the Alive product is. If you are heading out for a trip in the next week or so, throw it into the bucket and it should be fine. One nice thing (kind of) is that it is really easy to firm up Gulp. Just let it sit out in the air for a little bit. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Thanks Mark! Is the Alive! juice the same between baits (so I could put crawlers in the Emerald Shiner Alive bucket)?

Mark Sexton, who replied to the Gulp! question, is very involved with the development of Gulp! and other Berkley bait products. His job is to test the stuff in real life conditions to see how fish react to it. He is an outstanding angler and knows what the baits can and can't do.
