I need a new motor cover seal for a 1973 Johnson 9.5 HP motor. I realize that a new replacement seal is not available but do you have any ideas on where to look for a seal that might be adapted/modified for a motor cover seal?

I will look around the weather seal sections of the home repair stores but additional possibilities would be appreciated.

You might chat with people at a body shop about weatherstripping for automobiles- something that you could buy off a bulk roll.

Call Twin City outboard...they may have what you need?? Phone 952.496.1951

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried an auto body shop. No dice!

I had previously checked with two marine dealers in Florida and two in Illinois plus checked multiple suppliers on the internet. The correct part just is not available.

I guess I will have to consider how to make/modify something myself.

Jack:

Take a look at JC Whitney- the catalog-sales auto parts people out of Chicago. They used to list a ton of different types of bulk weatherstripping, with cross-sections of the weatherstripping shown in their catalog. There are some generic weatherstrip pieces listed at this site.

Would be very surprized if you could not find it here. I have obtained parts for a 1962 6hp merc from here.
Good Luck

Give Dick's Marine in Fox Lake, Illinois a call (847-587-2102). This guy has loads of parts for old OMC motors. Hope it works for you.

HI. I found that the cover on my johnson kicker 15hp 4stroke vibrated more than i liked. I found this weather stripping that was rolled up and looked like white putty in narrow strips, maybe 1/4 inch round that i could stick on the old seal and when i put the cover on it would squesh it down and tighten up the joint pretty good. when it got old I would just clean it off and put on some new pieces. it was cheap and worked good. good luck.

Problem solved!

I found a guy in my home town who specializes in old Johnsons and Evinrudes. He operates out of a tin building that is surrounded outside and has rooms inside that are loaded with junk motors and parts. He had a complete cover with a good seal and only wanted $25. The cover is scratched, scarred and has been painted over but it is just what I needed. The price was about the same as a lot of the varieties of seals and gaskets I had searched through.

I really do appreciate the help from you guys.
