Does anyone know for sure if you can/cannot cut the transducer cable and splice in your plug??? Seems that if the unit uses a 200khz 20 degree transducer you should be able to use any of them??????? Also, as long as the power rating was equal or higher.

Is there some kind of difference in load or impedance??

Is there tech support for your depth finder? I've seen the answer both ways here on the board. I've heard it both ways on the tech side also.

Well, Ive cut the transducer wire on my X85 a few times when my autopilot went bizerk, soldered it, heat shrinked it, and never had any problems.

All I can tell you about this is you are not supposed to shorten the cable. It is calibrated at that length. A sonar works by measuring the time it takes a sound wave that is transmitted by the unit to reach the target and return. You start messing with the cable and you throw off the calibration. But I really dont know how much, Im sure someone will see this post who is qualified on this subject and reply.

It can make a difference whose transducer you use. Some transducers are wired differently from others. You need to know which wires go where. (Not all transducers use a simple coax cable anymore.)

Cable length can make a differnce, although it has nothing to do with the speed of sound. The units expect a certain impedance and capacitance, so if you shorten the cable more than a couple of feet, then you can have problems.

In general, you should try to use the same manufacturer's transducers with their sonar units.

If you're asking because you have one manufacturer's transducer mounted on the boat and another manufacturer's sonar unit, then you don't have much to lose by cutting the connector off of the transducer that you have in the boat. BUT, if you wire it up wrong, you could damage the sonar unit. Contact the sonar unit's customer service department. They may be able to help.
