Hello Everyone,
I want to put up a place for everyone to go to talk about the live underwater fish camera. The camera is located in Shiocton, WI. Currently it runs from dawn to dusk until we are satisfied with our lighting, then we can run it at night. Enjoy! Please leave you comments and what you have seen on the camera. Walleye Central has played an important role in helping make this happen. I will be checking the thread quite often.
Thank you,
Gary - WRC :muahaha:

Great job & great idea, Gary. You must have moved the camera since yesterday, looks like you put it on a nice inside break. I've seen many fish this morning, steady stream of mostly males & 1 large female.
Where is it located? I wanna fish there... :)

This is unbelievable! I have been watching the this whole week and have not seen a walleye. This morning I turned it on and I have seen about 6. This camera is in Shiocton correct? Good to know they are making there way up there already.

...the camera is indeed in Shiocton. Where exactly? Well you know how it goes, I could tell you but then I'd have to....well....you know. My suggestion would be just dock you boat and head up river for a few minutes and sit on the slower/shallow side of the river. Adjust you jig size to the current. I use a "tip up" jig in pink or blue. You can use green and orange, but those also catch al of the other fish like carp. Add a fuzzy grub that matches the color or even an all white fuzzy grub. Once the grub is on, trim the hair up to about the same length as the bottom of the arch of the hook. We have found this to work better, as the fish does not touch the hair until the hook is in it's mouth. There has been a lot of success on the Gulp. Get the 2 or 2.5 inch minnows. For live bait use, I use small lake shiners or fatheads. The fatheads live longer and there isn't a very big difference at all in production between the two.

I didn't see any fish for the few minutes I had it on yesterday but today they are cruising through in singles, pairs, even saw a group of 5 go through at once. This rocks. This might really affect my production at work but the walleye run should be a national holimonth in my opinion!! :)

remember, before you think because you see walleyes that they are moving up already, there are many resident fish that don't leave the area year round. this is not to say they are not moving, but dont forget the fish that are always there.

....I am testing with lighting right now. The infrared is not as nice for the river, due to it illuminating every single piece of silt. I have a flashlight to attach to it, but I'm not sure the fish will want to swim to it. However, mounting a light above, then I think they won't care. i should have it up this weekend, so Friday night could be the first 24 hour viewing!

Brilliant idea.
Nice to see that American ingenuity is alive and well.
I hope it is a big success for you. I see a lot of potential.
Better get the patent protection and franchise details worked out quickly, there is going to be a lot of towns across the US and Canada who have annual fish migrations that make or break a tourist season that would love something like this..

Have been keeping my "eye" on this today. Not seeing as many fish as yesterday. I wonder what is different?
Question: the bottom of the viewing sreen shows "475 viewers" --is this the number of people watching this particular feed or the Ustream service in general?
Thought: This project alone could be worth a whole heck of a lot for Shiocton buisnesses! Think of the people it could draw.

That is the number of people just watching WolfRiverCam. If you go into any of the other Ustream feeds, the numbers are different. If you want to do me a favor, click on the feed, it takes you to the Ustream site and click on the most popular or most viewed tab, scroll down and see where it is at for most viewers, then report back. Yesterday it was ranking about 18th at 5pm.

LOL I just saw a mister twister go flying down stream!
This shows you how much patience us fisherman have. Here I sit watching leaves go by just waiting for a fish to show. Then I look down and see there are 539 other people watching the same thing, Nothing. I did see over a 100 fish yesterday, yes I was watching ALL day.
I have the winter blues really bad or Spring Fever whichever

At the bottom of the viewing screen (the cam view) hidden in the bottom right corner, if you place your cursor in the very bottom corner of the view, the words "Toggle Full Screen" will appear, click on that and the viewing screen will be full screen on your computer.
To remove the full screen view, on your keybooard the VERY top row where all the F-Keys are, the very first key shoud be your escape key, to get it back to normal view, hit that key.
I also hook my laptop up to my TV via S Video cable and we watch it on our big 52" flatscreen.....its amazing....
Again Thanks for the pleasure...We're hooked.

Usually I am working on it in the morning and fire it back up before I leave for work which is usually 7:20. You have to remember though it might be fairly light outside, it is still pretty dark 6 ft down. or...
...we are getting all the fished lined up again to swim by the camera. They sometimes can be uncooperative. Usually a "shiner" or "mud minnow" bride will get them to settle back down.

I am looking to the DNR for a little assistance or help with the camera for Sturgeon. Those big beasts are very abusive on everything they get around and I just don't want to be buying a camera every week. My intentions are to put the camera in the spawn path. Yeah, it's not as busy this morning. Yesterday was a very good viewing day. Maybe it will be an "afternoon bite", and we'll see more then.
Question for those who live up there, if you're on here....
what is the cloud cover up there today? The water looks darker today, so either it's cloudy or the water itself is murkier than yesterday.

That is the coolest thing I have seen in a long time. Are you fishing close to the camera! Fish movement has slowed down the last several days. Water is getting warmer fast so it wont be long and the marshes are going to get busy. There are still alot of fish down river so fishing should be good for awhile yet.

Hi,
cool site. The pops up ads are definately annoying. Surpised me to see a hugo chavez station on a walleye site. However; I suppose your choices are limited in shioctan. too bad.
I saw several fish in the background over a ten minute span. Nothing obvious as water was a little cloudy.

People are posting screen captures from the cam on another site - cool way the share your "catch".
Someone could set up a tournament where the biggest amount of the screen occluded by an image wins. You could have different categories... walleye, sheepshead, maple leaf.
fyi, I registered on walleye central in appreciation of the cam.

I can't figure out how to copy and then post an image from the screen, if someone could post those directions it would encourage people to post the pictures - competition (and rules for the competition) would not be far behind - we all know fisherman!!!

First I would like to thank the Walleye Cam Guy for making this happen! This is the coolest thing i've seen in a long time! Thanks for bringing this to us!
I do have to disagree about the big packs from Bago and Poygan not being up here yet. Alot of folks dont know that the big packs come up under the ice. Most of the big migration is allready well above Shiocton and what we are seeing is the last few stragglers coming thru. Tues and Wed showed many fish and since it's been a few here and a few there. Most of the fish are in the marshes that they could get into and the others will be spawning in the river. 42 degrees is the magic number for the spawn. By next weekend you will see spawned out females being caught and going back downstream on this camera.
Alot of folks will disagree and say well why are they catching so many in Fremont and New London, well yes there are still fish making their way up but alot of those fish do not go up any further as there are many spawning areas around there as well.
Thanks again for the great footage as I cannot wait to see the downrun!

I can never see anything besides a black screen. on air or off its the same screen 24/7. Maybe this thing is a joke.

No joke. If you can't see it, when it says it's "on air", then it's something on your end. Right now it's "off air", so it's a black screen.
It works when it's streaming. Try downloading the latest Flash Player version. It might be as simple as that.

So if there is 800 people watching, and seen a lot of walleye today. How many boats do you think will be there this week ? Although this is very cool to watch and will be good for shiocton business I would'nt atempt to fish there unless you love 1000 boats in one spot. It's sites like this and lake link that have created a nightmare for what used to be fairly easy peacfull fishing areas, I would just like tro thank you both

Enjoying the view. I have seen two walleye in about 20 minutes of viewing. TUrned it on about five minutes ago and it looked like a rod was either in the water or reflecting into the water. A little later there was turbulence and the camera moved. Maybe someone was parked over the camera?

We are trying to broadcast overnight tonight. I have a minor bug to work out of that. It seems with the power supply I am using, it wants to push the IR on which makes for a funky picture. I'll find out what the deal is and get it corrected. Looks like we will be capturing the sturgeon spawning as well.

Always Fishing
04-06-2009, 07:18 AM
For those of you looking to capture fish images from the camera it is actually quite simple. First, it is much easier to see the fish if they are larger so...click the Toggle fullscreen button (bottom right) to go to full screen.
Now you will need to be ready as the fish typically don't stay in front of the lens too long. Position your mouse cursor or arrow over the Pause button (second from left) and click it when you see the image you want. If it's not the image you want to save or print, simply click again and you will go back to live camera. If it is the image you want, hit the Print Screen button which is at the top of your keyboard and just to the right of F12. This makes a copy of the image you see on your screen.
Next...open Microsoft Word and hit Control + V on the keyboard. This will paste the image onto your document. Save it and/or print it. The images usually look better if you give your document the landscape setting under Page Setup. Hope this helps.
Now...if I spent as much time on the water as I do watching this camera, it would be a lot easier to fill the freezer...lol.
Have fun all and good fishing,
AF

Why when someone does something new or helpful do morons have to complain. There are a lot of miles of river and places to fish. Some people are unable to fish like myself. This takes me to the water and is almost as good as fishing, it makes me feel a part of it. If it reuins fishing why are you watching it?

Not sure if it will help or not, but there are new handicap access ramps next to the Rustic Wolf Inn at Shiocton. You can roll out right over the water. They are very cool. Plus, the sturgeon will probably be spawning there as well.

Not sure why that is. It's funny, that I saw 6 trailers at the boat landing this morning, but my unique hits on the website at the end of yesterday was in excess of 36,000. For those that don't know, that is 36,000 different people that have come to the site. 6 boats......not 6,000 or 600 or even 60........6

If you click the little icon in the lower-right-hand corner of the video feed the picture will go full-screen. Then the annoying little pop-up doesn't hide the walleyes swimming past!
this is really cool. however--every time a fish swims by you have an ad that goes across the bottom where the fish is. why not switch the ads to the top. otherwise it's annoying.
other than that it's one of the coolest things i've seen in a while. good job whoever you are.

Bobger-I think I need your 12 step program!
Wonder if some of the weeds/garbage on the camera post is flairing 'em off ?
I don't think so, but I'm not a fish swimming by there either. With that said, it's been my learning that fish will swim at a angle when they travel upstream (against the current). Why? Because, it's easier. They use less energy than if they were going straight into the current.
It's the very reason that when you see handliners working a river, they are often at a 45-60 degree angle against the current.
If you look at the image, the current is flowing directly straight down from the lens, and the fish are all moving at an angle, like you said.
I noticed that earlier today too, and remembered what an "old timer" Detroit handliner once told me.
They say, "Proof is in the pudding"...well, this is pretty good proof of what he said. ;)
Cool stuff indeed! :rock-on:

As many walleye travel up to spawn, those who preceded them and have spawned travel back down. The real (unanswerable) question is, "Where is their point of origin?". For everyone fishing south of Shiocton, that's the question that really matters. Are the spawned out fish heading back to Winnebago, Poygan, Lake Winneconne, or are they upper Wolf River fish full time???
how do you do a screen shot other than Alt print screen is there a pause button that I am missing they go by pretty quick
There is a pause button at the bottom left corner of the viewer. If you can't see it just hold your cursor in that corner and it will pop up. I normally can't see those options either...but, they're there. :)

There is a pause button at the bottom left corner of the viewer. If you can't see it just hold your cursor in that corner and it will pop up. I normally can't see those options either...but, they're there. :)
Thanks worked great

Capturing Screen Shots is actually quite a bit like fishing. I had a bunch of big females on screen, but failed to "catch" them. Next best thing to the real thing, I guess. Thanks Admin.

Click the pause button on the video player first...then you can capture the screen shot of the fish.

but I have my best man on it. Maybe the river ran out of fish. just kidding. The provider sometimes does an update, and it boots the feed. That is why it is important for people to fire me off an email and just put in the subject line "camera down" If you are going to put anything else in the email, I won't read it if the subject reads what I said above, so be aware of that. I will just see the subject heading and immediately take action.
Thank you everyone!

I actually saw a jig with a minnow being fished this afternoon right in front of the camera - a walleye came to check it out and got spooked by too aggresive jigging....

First hit the pause buttom on the viewing screen, its in the bottom left corner of the Viewer. If you run your cursor over it you will see it say pause. Once you see a fish on the screen hit pause, then on the top row of your keyboard (well on most keyboards) is a button that should say "prnt Scrn" or something on that order. Hit the Print Screen key... Now if you open an email, in the body of the email right click on your mouse and hit paste. The image will paste into your email and you should be able to send that still photo.
Hope that helps.

Water temp according to the river cam is 42 degrees. Another 5 degrees and the spawn will be happening. Next warm up. So far I have seen. Walleye(some very big and ripe) sucker, smallmouth, carp, sucker. Pretty neat idea. Sturgeon won't be far behind

Walleye will typically spawn between 42 and 46 degrees, and with the full moon being this Thursday and warmer temps coming, I would expect the spawn to be in full swing over the next several days. This will make for some slower fishing, but it 's better than sitting in the house.
Good fishing,

i can pause and catch the fish but no clue how to do a screenshot.
On a PC.........
1. Hold down the Ctrl button.
2. Simultaneously press the PrtSc Button (on my keyboard, right above the F10 button, may be slightly different on yours)
3. You may now release both buttons. The photograph is now stored in your memory but you need to put it somewhere.
4. Open up MS Paint (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Paint)
5. Hit Edit->Paste and the screen shot will magically appear on your screen.
6. File->save and give that bad boy a filename.

love what you have done. great job.
what would also be neat is if you could put something like two white markers about 16 inches apart in front of the camera. this would give folks an idea of how big these fish really are. I mean small white little nubs sticking out of the bottom maybe an inch high kind of thing. also, where ever you have the camera now, most of the fish seem to be riding on the left side of the screen where it looks like the little mound you are on bottoms out forming a valley of sorts.
maybe try to move the camera left if at all possible.
still, great job great idea. last time i looked at live feeds it was to watch (well never mind)!!!!

Ok, I posted 2 screen shots on the homepage, from our viewers, but forgot to give them credit for the catch (dang it!) I will correct it in the morning. 1 of them was from Spring Fever and the other from Bernmilo. Thank you both! Also, thank you everyone for the feedback and the continued viewing. My brother Glen told me he had seen the viewer total was up to 1,450 people at one time yesterday. I spoke with a couple people this morning and it sounds like we will be going live until the ice comes and then maybe above water to watch the snowmobilers go by. Wolf River Cam added 21,000 new visitors yeterday....again like the day before.

I have started monitoring the wolf river cam when I can. So far I have seen Walleye, Northern Pike, Sucker, Carp, Sheephead, and Smallmouth Bass. I have seen many walleye in that 4 to 5 pound class with swollen bellys. 1 really nice size walleye that went way bigger. Maybe 8 lbs.

Wow!!! totally new perspective on the timing of the walleye spawn! 44 degrees and with the weather forcast I'm sure the magic 47 will be hit some time in the next day or so. The Wolf spawn on average ussaully happens around April 10th and looks like it will be no different this year. I have seen alot of big fish swim by today. The really big females are showing up last. Thanks again to everyone envolved with the Wolf River Cam. For those of us who can't be on the water it helps us stay in touch with what is happening on the Wolf..

Thank you,

None of the above. Following the DNR shock boat with a big dip net works the best. Actually, vertical jigging with 1/16th - 1/8th oz jigs on the slow side. My dad does pretty well and he uses a sjdgbapwbgrib....sorry the dang keyboard is acting up again. Anyway, my brother does very well too and he normally uses the llknasfvajlsvb....stupid keyboard!!! Well I use a tip-up jig with a fuzzy grub, tipped with a minnow. Preferrably a small lake shiner or fathead.
Good luck, I'll get my keyboard fixed.
