My unit like others I have read about locks up especially in shallow water and it is a pain. I sent it back to the company last year when it was new, but nothing has changed. My question is that their is a software update called 2.4 beta that supposedly addresses this problem. Has anyone loaded this and does it work?

I have not loaded the 2.4.2 Beta on my LCX-27, but I have loaded 2.4.2 Beta on my LMS-527- it's supposed to fix the same problem. I was able to run in 6' of water with thick weeds without the screen locking up. I switched back-and-forth between the 2.4 and 2.4.2 Beta versions and found 2.4.2 Beta behaved much better in shallow, weedy water. I'd advise you to download and save both current versions of software, plus keep the older versions if you still have them. It's pretty simple to switch between versions. Older versions are usually available from Lowrance support.

This past winter I bought new electronics for the boat
(I lost every thing on the last trip of the year, the screens all started bleeding)
And I was a bit nervous after reading about the lockups
But I bought a LCX-27 and a 520
I installed them this spring.. The 27 had Ver. 2.4 and I had to update the 520 (it had ver. 1.5)
Took the boat out the other day for the first time
Both of them work great, no problems at all in the shallow water
I love the color screens and the GPS is allot faster reading the position then my older global map unit
The lock ups aren't happening on all of the Lowrance units

I argee ManX
I have a 28c hd (same as the 27 but with the hd) and its been great.
I did update the software once, only because they moved the "cancel navigation" choice to the top of the menu instead of having to scroll through menus to get to it which I had always thought was dumb.
I love the thing

I had the shallow water flashing problem on my 27c, updated the software to 2.4.0 (not beta) and followed the shallow water setup instructions, the unit worked great!

Hey fisher-1, where did you find "shallow water set up instructions"? I have mine on the shallow water setting but can not find any instructions in the manual. I have two of the LCX27's one with 2.4 and one with the beta software. I tried the beta this winter ice fishing a few times and it was not performing very well at all. I have only had it out a couple of times so maybe its me.... not sure yet.
Thanks!

I was just out yesterday Ice fishing again with my 27 Beta software after I reset with the shallow water instructions from "fisher-1". Took a while sometimes to find bottom but did work better. Also, since I am obviously stationary when ice fishing, it was odd that the depth would change while just sitting there. It would change from 19.5 to 22.5 feet. Maybe the bottom type ?
Thanks again "fisher-1" for the info.
Forgot the report. Caught about 75 crappies. The biggest was maybe 8-9 inches. Could not find any big enough to clean and eat. Maybe next time.
