We have some great fishing in SE Wis. THe Winnebago system produced fantastic numbers of decent walleye last year and should continue this year. We also have Green Bay (up both sides) with numbers of large walleye. The Wisconsin River chain from Petenwell Dam through Castle Rock to the Dells and down to the Sauk Prairie Dam can be fantastic. Don't forget about the Mendota chain, which hosted the PWT Championship a couple years back. These areas are within a good 2 hour drive of Milwaukee. The Mississippi is a bit farther drive, but is another great fisheree.

Lund Dude pretty much covered it all. You may also want to consider the Fox River by DePere. Trophy walleye fishing is available, however, you do not want to eat the fish there!

I live in Milwaukee and there is some great walleye fishing 30 to 45 miles west of here.Pewaukee lake has some great fishing mostly a night bite but it is there none the less.Rock river Jefferson and Frt.Atkicson if thats how you spell it.Lake Koshganong feeds it.
And dont be afraid to fish the harbor and the Milwaukee river as in the past 3 - 4 yrs the walleyes have come back pretty well.Big fish have been caught by the old north ave dam. Also in the harbor there is more rip rap than you can fish.Smallmouth also are doing well as are the northerns. And then theres always browns and rainbows and coho and kings to play with.
As the other posts said so well there is a ton of fishing with in 3 hrs.I hope he enjoys Milwaukee as the people are for the most part helpfull and good. The politics stink but thats a whole post all by itself.

Scooter,
Where do you suggest a person to launch? I've been playing with the idea of fishing for walleyes around the Milwaukee River but have no idea where to start. Summerfest grounds? Horan bridge area? Pieces of eight area? Where should a person start? Is this a spring fling only or are they there all year? Please help.

Ive caught them in spring in the river like I said at the old north ave dam I boat up from the summer fest grounds launch at mckinley. It makes for a nice ride thru the city and I like to check out the bldgs and bridges.I have not fished alot of the river but have fished a few bridge abutments as there seems like all kinds of rubble around a few of them.Later in the year I have had some success at the mouth of the river at the mud line. Also I have had some success working the rip rap and pond area of summerfest and mckinley its self.
Ive never knocked them dead but they are there and you have to figure them out.I have talked to people who say that in Aug.- Nov.that claim to catch nice fish casting stick baits at night from shore between Pieces of Eight and Summer fest although again I have not tried this but am planning to give it a shot.
The smallmouth I catch come on small cranks and jigs with powerleaches again fishing the rip rap and necked down areas.
This is one of them sleepers that doesnt get very much pressure and the guys that do fish it for the most part are tight lipped.I have seen fish up to 12 lb caught in the river rare but it happens.I havent seen one that big in years down there, but I have not spent a whole lot of time there.
Ive gotten them to 6lb and thats a pretty good fish for being 10min.from my garage.Again its fishing mostly and every once in a while you do some catching.
I hope this helps

Scooter is right, I live in Fort Atkinson and in the spring and fall there can be some pretty good fishing on the rock river. Sometimes it is very hit and miss tough. Good luck and I hope you like the area!
