what are the advantages and disadvantages of both. I am looking at a 2002 honda 4 stroke carburator 90hp, is this a good motor or not and is their extra maintenance with one or the other.

I don't know alot about engines but EFI is better because of faster starting, better gas milage, and I don't believe you have to do anything to the EFI if you go to higher altitudes. EFI is better then carbs, that's why everyone is going with them. Try and find a new carb pickup or car. Everything is EFI now.

Yes that 90 Honda is a good motor very dependable.Yes it is a little hard starting but not that bad.The new 90 is lighter and is efi but if the price is right and its in good condition buy it.

If you were buying a current model new,,no doubt going EFI would give advantage : MAYBE Easier starting than SOME carbed (my carbed Yamaha starts instantly even from cold), ability to dial in your idle RPM,more consistent performance than carbs in all weather conditions. No need to rejet if using at high altitude locations.

However, since your buying used, and likely wanting to spend less money,a carbed 4 stroke will still be a fine motor. The real differences between the 2 are very suttle. I am running a carbed 4 stroke for years and the differences to me would not be worth the cost of any upgrade. No doubt, the next NEW one I buy, will be EFI.
