I never have planned fishing or hunting trips around moon phases. How influential are they? Any firsthand knowlege is appreciated!

75 % of all world record fish have been caught 3 days before, 3 days after or on the day of the full or new moon. Looks like there is somthing to it after all. When I plan a fishing vacation I try to plan it around the new or full moon phases. Good fishing to you and may all your fish be lunkers.

Many other things also play a critical role. But, when other conditions are good the moon can really make the difference. Start a journal. I have 2 1/2 years documented. My big fish and numbers of fish came around new or full moons.

Czar and Matt are correct. I, like Matt, keep a journal of my fish outings. Without a doubt, I catch the majority of my fish in the 3-5 days before and after a full moon.

If it works out that a weather system is moving in during these periods, then watch out. The walleyes strap on the feed bags and hit hard!

There seems to be something to moon rise and moon set. Next time your hammerin'em take a look around and see if you can see the moon. Many times its near the horizon or visible somewhere in the sky. Coincidence or my imagination...

For big walleyes in the fall I definately would plan my trip around moon phases. My biggest walleye by far was caught the night of the new moon. Just a coincidence? I'm not chancing it!

In my experience the tougher the fishing the more important moon phase and solunar periods became. If the fish are neutral to negative... likely your only real chance is during major.

Excellent fishing can happen when sunset/rise and moonset/rise times are really close to each other!
