Just got the Cabelas ad and the 522c is $449. Been looking at getting a beginner GPS and need advice. I have an older Lowrance sonar that works great. I would like the 522c for the GPS. Should I get the external antenna? I have a full windshield boat if that matters. Have read on here that the internal GPS doesn't work the best under a windshield. thanks.

Get the LMS-520C. The internal antennas on the 522 were a pain.

I have a 522 under my windsheild and have no problems with it.
I had a problem with the 520, which I ran through my trolling motor transducer. For some reason couldn't see much on the screen. Hooked up my Lcx-27 and work's great. I don't know if it was the power difference between the two or what, but might be hesitant if that's your plan. However, the 520 worked fine with the transducer that comes with unit.

I also have had great results with my 522 under the windshield. That is a great price - I paid about $200 more than that exactly one year ago.

If you are looking for just a GPS, they have Raymarine A65's on sale for $300 on several sites. It is a much larger screen, and a quality GPS for less money. I have had the 5" screen lowrance units for GPS's, and they work fine, but the 6.5" screen is much easier to see. If you shop around, you can get the A65 Raymarine charplotter, and the DS600X digital fishfinder with a 6" screen for a little more than you are looking to spend on one unit.

I just bought (and returned), a 522 last week. It took on average 30 minutes to find enough satellites to acquire a position. It would lock on for about five minutes, then lose position about every 10-15 seconds. Sometimes it would find the position after a minute or two, but more times than not, it would take several minutes. I returned it and got the 520. I mounted the puck, and haven't had a problem since.

I just got done shopping around for a $300.00 raymarine a65 and the chaepest one i could find was $1,299.99 at cabela's bargin barn. When i read one poster who said they can find a $300.00 raymarine i was all over that because they aint cheap. Please let me know where i can find one for that price. Right now i have a new 522ic and if i keep it away from my windsheild it works just fine. I got caught out in some bad fog and it took me home and never lost position on me once. I have talked to people who have had problems locking on to satalites with pucks also. If mine gives any trouble i'm looking at the globalmap 8200c.

They seem to be nice units, I heard a lot of people having problems loosing bottom with them, but four friends and I all have them and have had no issues with them me fiberglass boats. My only complaint is that with the new software eg.. 2.3,2.4,2.4 beta is that with the navionics card card the color of the wing dams on the Mississippi River changed from Grey to a cream color. Now they blend in with the shoreline. Does anyone else have the same problem as me? They tried to blame it on the card, but that is not true because I put my card in a lCX 18 and have black wing dams. I tried over and over to get Lowrance to help me and fix this problem, but they are putting all of their apples in the new HD units not the LMS series of unit. I guess we more people to complain. Complaining got us 2.4 beta for the people that are loosing bottom.

I bought my 600 from bethel and got in just a few days. The thing with the a65 is that there is another $400 or so that needs to be purchased to make the fishfinder work. They come without the deucer and the HD converter box. But it is still a great deal on a very nice unit.

My LMS 522 does not work too well. Loses bottom and position. I'm very dissapointed in Lowrance. I've sent it back twice and they just keep sending me a new transducer and telling me there is nothing wrong with the unit.
I have a 332C on my Ranger Reata 1850 and Ranger mounted the puck under the windshield.
I had a problem of losing the GPS signal.
They moved the puck to the rear of the boat and now works just fine. Some of the units work fine with the puck under the windshield and some do not.

If you are loosing bottom install the 2.4 beta software from Lowrance's website, I've know people that have had this problem and it has fixed all their problems. This is why they made this software change and it also has options you can turn on and off for shallow fishing, trolling, deep water fishing, and etc. I have a 522 also but I never had a problem with mine but I installed the beta software because I like the features it has. My only complaint is with the Navionics card it changes the color of the wing dams on the Mississippi River from grey to cream color and they are harder to see. I am presently working with Lowrance to get this change to a different color.
