With fishing opener just a few weeks away, I am wondering where the fish will be. I will be fishing Lake Holcombe in Wisconsin, I have never fished the lake before. What kind of structure or elements should I look for first to find walleye?

Thanks,

Tony

I believe that the walleye will be in the water....

Now that's out of the way, I have never fished that lake. I'm assuming that the spawn will be over by opener in that body of water so look to drop off/points adjacent to likely spawning areas. After the spawn, the walleyes more to deeper water to re-coop for a week or two then start moving to the summer haunts.

It just all depends on where the walleyes are in relation to their spawning cycle. Last year, we had a late ice out and the walleye were up shallow. I couldn't seem to catch anything where I normally would but started seeing people trolling cranks in 5 FOW. I saw alot of walleyes being caught on the cranks.

If you don't have any luck, go get a walleye sandwich for lunch. Good luck

If Holcombe Lake is in fact the "Holcombe Flowage" fish it like a flowage - not a lake. Flowages have river and lake characteristics combined. Find deeper channels near mid lake wood wing dams (lay downs, stick ups, etc. - even the heads and tails of visible or underwater islands in the middle of moving water (this does not mean "fast" water). Fish the channel and it's "S" turns and bluff type walls. Then, fish the slack water edge of where that channel comes closest to wing dams of any sort combined by wider expanses of shallow shore features. Then move further into the slack water. Overhanging shade (if any) is also a reasonable bet. Light line, small baits/jigs/long casts.
