You can't prop a boat correctly without a tach. You need to know the WOT (Wide Open Throttle) rpm with a normal load in the boat and fueled up. Once you get the rpm then you can compare this to the range recommended by Evinrude and either go up or down in pitch. A tach is one of the most important things to have on your boat to have it running efficiently.

It is crucial that you have that E-tec running in the correct RPM range. It is a bad thing to not know where you are at. The optimum RPM range for the 60 E-tec is 5600-5750- but anywhere between 5500-6000 RPM's WOT is acceptable.
Again, I agree that you need to have a tach.

I had a 2007 60 HP E-Tec on a Lund 1700 Explorer and was running a PowerTech RED3R13POM14D (three blade 13.25 x 13). First thing to make sure is that your tach is reading correctly. Last year I replaced my 60 E-Tecn with a 2008 75 E-Tec. I have the "System Check" tach in my boat. I came to find out that my "System Check" tach was reading 200 RPM low. If your 60 E-Tec is 2008 or newer and you have Lowrance electronics, I'd recomend buying the the cable and T's (under $75) to network your E-Tec into the Lowrance. Beside correct RPM you will have access to much more engine information such as temp, engine hours, %engine load, etc.

The comment about making sure the tach is correct is important. I replaced my 75 HP merc two stroke with a 60 hp Merc four stroke last year and asked the dealer to do a tach check.
My tach read 400 rpm high.
