I think the fifth wire on a Ranger trailor harness is for the back-up lights / surge brake release. I am guessing that this wire ties into the vehicles back up light wire but it would be nice to know for sure. Anyone know?
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
You use a 12 volt circuit tester you can know for sure.

Yes the wire needs to tie into the backup lights. It activates a solinoid to release the brakes.

The 5th wire is for exactly what you said. You can not back up with out having it hooked up it will lock up the wheels. If you have a trailer plug (roung 7 prong) on your truck you can buy the ranger adapter from ranger. Or you will have to find the backup wire on your harness and tap into that.
Your dealer should have hooked it up for you or did you get it used?
Good luck with your Ranger I love mine and have a 2002 620 coming.
