View Full Version : boat motor stored two years......a problem ?
I'm looking to buy a boat a gentleman who has had it in storage for two seasons. he said he sprayed fogging oil in the engine a 9.8 merc prior to storage and put in fresh oil inside it. since then,it hasn't run in two years. it sat outside in the pennsylvania winters. will it be ok ? what should i look for ?

It will almost certainly need a water pump impellor, and should have its lower unit pressure checked for leaks. It may need a carb kit. Take it to a dealership with an honest shop, and have them check it out. There shouldn't be anything expensive wrong with the engine, but a checkup with the right tools is a good idea.
fogging down the motor should be done by running the motor and spraying the fogging oil into the carb so everything from the carb back gets coated. When it is sprayed directly into the cyl.,
it does not coat the inside parts. I would pull the spark plugs out and turn the motor over to make sure there is not an excess of oil in the cyl., which could potentially bend a rod. The other thing to ask about would be if a fuel stabilizer had been run into the carb. to keep the fuel from gumming up the carb. You might run alittle fuel conditioner with your first tank of fuel to help clean the carb up, and I'd throw in a new set of plugs.
Lastly, check to make sure that the motor was put away without any water in the lower unit. It could freeze and break the lower unit if it had enough in it. Take out the bottom plug in the gearcase to check it, and you should get nothing but but clean oil. Have fun and be safe!
