I am currenty running a 19 p tempess on my 175 verado/1800 pro-v. I am thinking about going to a 21p tempess. Is anyone running a 1800 prov with a 175 verado and a 21p tempess? Or know someone who is?

The 175 verado rpm range is 5800 to 6400 rpms, you should stick with what you have, if you go to a 21 pitch your going to run around the 5850 rpm range way to low and you'll actually lose speed, gas milage, and run the risk of doing damage to your motor.

I was planning on raising the engine if I go to a 21p since it is still in the factory set hole which would bring my RPMs back up into the max range. Correct?

Yes, but your still only going to see 6000 to 6100 rpms with the motor raised and a 21 tempest.

TomorrowI will see where I am at EXACTLY with rpms on the smartcraft gauges. Maybe I can get away with raising the engine and keeping the 19 p with out going out of or too far over the max rpm range...Thoughts?

I have a new 21 pitch tempest if you want to try it.It's on my 225 verado. You will have to come down to southern wisconsin-to test.

...raise the engine first and see what the resulting rpm is. If the factory set-up has the motor resting on the transom then should should be able to go up 2-3 holes before you find the ventilation on turns unacceptable. See what the rpm is and decide if you can spin the 21.

I made a mistake. Actual rpms are 6040 at wot trimmed up. The engine is in the second hole down from the top. I am going to raise it one holr to start...

I agree with propman if you are turning only 6040 and not 6250 like you said earlier then no way you can run a 21.Your motor should be on the second hole down with that motor,if you can raise it and get another 200-300rpm you will bring your speed up and be happy,by 2-3mph...

UPDATE.....I had my dealer raise my engine one hole. I had her out today. I am now turning 6220 rpms (was 6040) and gained about 2 mph(53mph gps)... The boat rides completely different. Seems smoother in rough water and there is less vibration. Is this common after raising a engine or is it all in my head?

Back around the late 1970s a book came out on boat set-up that was pretty widely read. Although intended more for bass boats, the writer built boats and explained that the basic factory transom height is set for the smallest motor they expected to run on the boat. He stated that if you're anywhere near max rating come up 2 holes off the transom. Back even further, the Merc set-up books from the 1960s stated that when your boat speed is 40+ you go up 1 inch, at 50+ go up a total of 2 inches, at 60+ go up a total of 3 inches. Today's boats have much better props then when these books were written, and factory transom heights have come up to go along with the newer props- and I usually rig 1 hole up at 40+, 2 holes at 50+ and 3 holes at 60+ for boats without jacking plates. This works for me..
