Scott T,

I'm not sure what's going on here, but I sent this gentlemen a Paypal payment for THIS unit. He received it and sent me an email saying the unit was going out yesterday. I hope we aren't being scammed!!!!

I agree with the above, I am new to walleye central but I like to think I can trust buyers and sellers on all the boards that I use. Keep us updated so we know what happens here. I was about 20 seconds away from also purchasing this unit but my emails from the seller and the fact that it was his first post and seemed to good to be true were suspicious to me so I ultimately backed out. I later googled the paypal email address he gave me and came up with an old post where this same fellow goes by "RIPMAN" on this board. I can't see why anyone would have to change their name on this board. Seems like some past dealings were a bit shady and didn't end well (see link below). I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and I hope there is a good explanation for all this and these people get what they rightfully purchased. See this post:

http://www.walleyecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130315

Hopefully you people used paypal or some other way of paying by credit card, just in case. Let us know what happens.

Still no unit!

Admin should be able to shut this guy down. Looks like he is working this board under a couple names. I did stop payment and jumboeye let me know it was stopped, but replied that WHEN the unit comes to send it back ???

Conducting business over the borders is always risky because Canada doesn't live by USA rules and prosecuting is nearly impossible.

That being said.

Have either of you received your units yet?

Is he staying in communication or is he ignoring you?

It takes a long time to ship from USA to Canada, not sure about vice versa and I know it's been a long time......but I don't know if I need to ban this guy yet or not.

Jumboeye said to send the unit back when you get it, should we see if you get it first?

Right now I don't see where anyone has lost any money and I'm not sure what the right thing to do is yet.

I do make a lot of business from Canada to USA or vice & versa. I always ask the seller to ship with a tracking # and always insist they use USPS because postal organisation are charging $5.00 for brokers fee instead of $40+ with Fedex or UPS.

With a tracking or confirmation # you can tell when the package has entered the country and you also can tell if it's stock into the Customs Postal Dept.

I never lost $$ (lucky maybe?)

What I dont like about this whole thing is that the seller has been very quiet and not reassuring that things are ok....

smells like the fish carasses from Monday that I forgot about in the trash that are sitting on the curb right now waiting for the garbage pickup.

Like Golden said communication is key!!!!

Exactly - pops in here for a couple posts, and now this. I hope this isn't what it looks like...

I've bought items from Canada and shipped items to Canada. I've never had it take more than 10 days either way.

Hope this gets resolved amicably.

He said it was sent Canadian Post, never got a tracking number from him, just a tracking number from Pay Pal that money was sent. All contact was done through this post. I did get my statement and it looks like he did get the money, will check into that further. I would think over two weeks should be enough time to ship? Not sure were to go with this now........

Jerry if I was you, I call paypal ( I assume you use this method) and have them freeze his fund and put in a dispute. I can't believe that he has not responded to this post and assure all that its ok. I ship and rec. stuff from Canada all the time. Business to business Doesn't take this long. Maybe 7 days top.

Word of caution to all. ALWAYS ask for a trcking number of some sort. ALWAYS call and talk to the person live so atleast you have a phone number and name. If they are not willing to give this information to you than it's proably bad sign. I am sorry if I am so harsh on this guy. I hate it when people fraud others and we can't do nothing about. If I was this guy, I be PM my buyers, repling to these post and letting all know is ok.

Swap board great when you can find a deal. Sucks when we've been cheated. I don't know 20 days seems too much!

Sorry for the rant.

I had a suspicious eBay transaction. Turned out to be a problem that eBay caused for a very legitimate seller from loose policies and responses about mistaken identities. Anyway, I asked a local US Postal Inspector how to protect myself.

He said, if you just want your money back, go through PayPal and you are protected. If I wanted to assure the ability to prosecute a fraud case he had some steps for me to follow.

1) Get the seller to mail an invoice through the USPS. 2) Send payment only to a street address and require ID and signature for payment envelope. 3) Make the payment with a United States Postal Money Order.

He was emphatic about the steps and also about the fact that the $$$$ amount did not matter; "Mail Fraud" would be investigated and prosecuted. My deal was for just under $100. He promised that if I was "cheated" by a phony sale it would be investigated and prosecuted.

From my past experience as a Deputy Sheriff I know that you do not want to mess with the Postal Inspectors, they really do bust them all if they can.

John and JerryAB,

What are you guys doing if anything yet? Are you guys in the process of tring to get the money back? Don't wait to long start it right away. Please let us know.

Do you guys get involve in helping in these matters? I assume seller sells at their risk-so does buyer buys at their risk. I've been here on this site for a long time and can't recall something like this before happening.

We can't really do anything, we don't have contracts with anyone and since this guy is from Canada it gets even harder.

I will ban this user, I think he was banned once before as "Superhog".

I would just reiterate what has already been said in this thread.

If you don't know the person, get as much information and protect yourself as best you can.

I wish I could do more.....but I can't.

All I can do is ban them as I find them.....but somebody has to know where this guy lives, you have his addresses...right?

Maybe somebody should pay him a visit.....with an officer in tow.

perchjerker
05-27-2009, 05:19 AM
they dont necessarily have to have his address if they paid him with paypal.

But in that case they have recourse though paypal. One person used paypal, I think. I wasnt clear on if the other one did also or how it was paid for.

be sure to contact paypal and get them to refund your money.... your window of opportunity is quickly running out as they have a time period that you are able to do such a thing.... at least start the process with them.

FYI -

This person has tried this scam on a number of other forums - albertaoutdoorsmen.com, fishingsaskatchewan.com, and others.

It's usually either Lowrance stuff or St. Croix rods.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM HIM.

P.S. I have family and connections in Regina, SK, Canada, if anyone would like to PM me their info, I'll see what I can do to get it to the authorities and have them follow up on it. I almost got taken by the guy myself, and I'd love to see him get nailed to the wall.

I hope it works out for you but based on the others feedback I would be a little nervous. I realize you have a trracking number but I would still start the chargeback process with paypal. Like the other post said your window of opportunity is closing quickly. If this is a scam he is probably wise to this process and who know what he could of possibly shipped you.

Worst case if you do the refund process with paypal and get the 522 you can always resend him the money.

I live a couple of hours from Regina, and will drive by there in a couple of weeks when I am there. I did some searching on the net and can not find a Jon Wimpney in Saskatchewan, and also cannot find a 334 Avon drive in Regina. 333 and 335 Avon drive exist, but not 334.

I don't know about the address, but I'm pretty certain on the Jon Wimpney. If he doesn't own a home, he won't have an address or be listed in the phone book. There are two Wimpney's listed in Regina (maybe a call to his parents would straighten it out lol) and I noticed there was a "J. Wimpney" that fished in the SWT Regina Beach tourney last weekend. Coincidence? We'll see...

I agree.

Unfortunately, just like any other kind of fraud or theft, we all end up paying for it in the end, it just gets built into the price.

I'd like to see the guy strung up, but there'll always be another to take his place.

That can easily be faked too. Do you think if someone was going to use this site to intentionally rip people off they would give a real phone number and address when registering?

And Scott does not have a full time staff to even attempt such a thing.

I agree with perchjerker but what we as members and users of this board could do is start leaving feedback on others kinda like you do on ebay.Buyers can look at the sellers comment history.Sure it is not gonna stop this completely but it may make buyers think twice and take extra precautions if the seller has no feedback or bad remarks and make legit sellers act properly when selling stuff because there reputation is also on the line.Saying this I personally would of left great feedback on every seller I have purchased from so far.

Another idea is to possibly restrict selling on the board unless you have a certain number of posts.25,50 posts maybe. Not sure on how hard that would be to control but would stop the guy who just joined from selling something without contributing to the board first with posts or the guy who just joined just to scam people.

Heatware.com is a sight where people leave feedback on transactions with others. Maybe there should be a recommendation that people post their Ebay and Heatware user names to get an idea of the sellers track record. If you are thinking of doing business with someone, you can always send off an email to the user name on ebay or heatware to insure they are who they say they are.

good ideas but...

this is a very rare occurance. If people just did due diligence and protect themselves by using paypal etc i dont really think any of that is necessary

look over the swap board the last few years...when has this happened before? Maybe once or twice?
