What kind of damage will I have running a Outboard with too much Oil in it? I found out today I have been running 2 times this year with my outboard having too much Oil. Its about Half a cm above the MAX mark. Did I mess up big time here?

San Chan,
Are you sure it was overfilled at the last oil change, or is your motor "making oil"? If you've been trolling a lot lately, or maybe the motor is running cooler than it should (thermostat?) some motors have a tendency to get condensation and/or gas in the crankcase. Does the oil have a gas smell to it? Here's an article to look at: http://www.boats.com/news-reviews/article/outboard-expert-trolling-four-stroke-contamination

You are probably OK. 1/2 cm is not so much over that your going to have issues with the crankshaft running in the oil. If that was the case, you would notice performance issues. Sluggish, rough running, uneven RPM's. Also, you'd see some to severe foaming of the oil, as the crank would whip it like a beater whips egg whites.

It is possible that you are getting fuel entering past the rings. Drain a bit out, and then keep an eye on it for change. If it keeps going up, then you might want to discuss this with your dealer's mechanic.

Smoke at start up like an older 2-stroker too. I had a Merc 115 EFI that was suppose to take 5 qts, in reality I could only get it to take 4 qts. When i first bought the boat new with the EFI I checked it all out and had to take a qt out to get it to the right level. When I changed it out I put 5 qts in and ended up taking a qt out again. After that I only put four in and was at correct level again.

Thanks for all the replies. Its was me overfilling. I changed the oil last year and having it right on the mark without taking notice that the Filter is going to take up some. First time firing up this season noticing the level went down because of the Filter so I just filled it up and went fishing. 2 trips now and finally got to check it again (Stupid me). Pretty sure its not making oil but just want to know how kind of damage I have done to it with that 2 trips out (total of 35 miles run).
