My guide wear is starting to look a little rough around the edges, what type of detergent should be used to wash, and any special care after I wash and dry it, or is it good to go.

I am not sure about detergent, but I know I would definately let it air dry. I had my set through the dryer once, and it bunches up on the velcro, and won't straighten out.

I have washed mine several times with no problems. I used a mild laundry soap, Woolite type, got it at WalMart. I put it in the dryer for ten minutes, and take it out, pull it out straight, hang it up, and air dry it. Turned out good as new.

As one of the other posts suggest - a good mild soap like woolite works great.
However, in contrast to leaving in the dryer for even 10 minutes - I prefer to simply let it air dry.
I have seen too many things get damaged by excess heat that is generated in the dryer.

Hang on a plastic hanger - over the laundry tub and simply let drip dry. It will be straight - non wrinkled, and it will hang straight.

Take care

I go by this, but like the wool lite idea. http://www.gore-tex.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ContentGView?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=10003

Go to an REI store (or similar) and find some NikWax products. Wash the Guidewear in NikWax Tech Wash and then 're-wash' it in NikWax TX Direct Wash-In to maintain the waterproofing.

http://www.nikwax-usa.com/

I've done this with my 3 year old Guidewear and it really rejuvenated the waterproofing after I had washed it with mild doses of conventional laundry detergents several times.

Nixwax works well, I've used their Tech Wash. With GoreTex it is recommended to use powdered detergent. Some liquid detergents can clog up the pores of GoreTex and limit breathability. In terms of drying, the drying process actually helps reactivate the DWR (durable water repellant) treatment that was applied to the GoreTex. The DWR is the stuff that makes water bead up so that the outer fabric layer (outside of the GoreTex membrane) does not "wet out". Gore actually sells a product called Revivex. This is a user applied DWR treatment and drying the garment at medium heat for something like 50 minutes is a crucial aspect of the application. Don't be afraid to dry your GoreTex!

I copied this off of WC from someone who, as you can see below, copied it also. These tips should work on Cabela's Guidwear as, if I'm not mistaken mine is made from GoreTex.

"RE: Best method for Cleaning GoreTex?"
I copied this from the Gorefabrics webpage.

GORE-TEX® OUTERWEAR
WASH
Machine-wash warm (40° C). Use detergent. No fabric softner.

DRY CLEAN
Follow manufacturer's instructions. If professionally dry cleaned, request clear distilled solvent rinse and spray repellent.

IRON
Steam-iron warm.

BLEACH
No chlorine bleach.

DRY
Tumble-dry warm.

WATER REPELLENT TREATMENT
Gore recommends REVIVEX® water and stain repellent for restoring the water repellent finish on GORE-TEX® fabrics.

STAIN REMOVAL
Use pre-wash treatment such as Shout or Spray 'n
Wash. Follow the pre-wash manufacturer's instructions.
Rinse well.

The REVIVEX is available on the Gore webpage @ $17.95 per bottle. Says it is enough to restore four garments.

5. "RE: Best method for Cleaning GoreTex?"
I wash mine in cold water, gentle cycle. Hang it on a plastic hanger and evenly spray exterior with Revivex (available anywhere that sells Gore-Tex). Then tumble
dry low (permanent press setting) for 20 minutes.

Works great and they still shed water like the day I bought them(4 years ago).

7. "something important you forgot"
The directions that someone above posted are correct except that they forgot to say that the detergent needs to be powder detergent, not a liquid soap.
I guess it is important for not clogging up the pores.

wash in powder detergent

tumble dry

Iron (this helps the fibers become waterproof again)

spray with a waterproofing spray (that breathes)

I wash my Guidewear using a liquid detergent, the name of which eludes me at the moment! It's called something like "Sportwash" and I picked it up at Galyans. It is forulated for GoreTex, among other things. I actually started using the stuff years ago to wash my blaze camo, as it is also a UV killer and has no perfumes, etc. It is a clear liquid. I can check on the name if you would like.

I ruined a set of bibs and a jacket using the dryer,
Do not put it in the dryer, it will ruin the gortex barrier (MELT IT) wait till summer and clean and air dry.
