I know that a FCC license is not required for non-commercial boats operating in the USA. However a license is required for international waters. Do I need the license for my yearly vacation to Canada, specifically Rainy Lake? At $150.00 the license is a little pricey. THANKS

It's my understanding that Canada followed the USA's lead and does not require a licensce for non commercial VHF use in their water's. However, I have heard that a "radio operator's" permit is required. This is free and good for life from the FCC. try the FCC's website for more info. Maybe someone else can verify if this is required.

Checked the FCC web page but couldn't find anything on a Free radio operators license.

I havent checked their site....my permit has "FCC753L 9/94" in lower right..maybe thats the "form" number? Like I said....maybe this regulation has changed too.

If you check the archives you will find a similar post from last year with some URL links to the Canada laws pertaining to VHF radios. Unless something has changed in the last 6 months, the answer to your question is no you do not need a license.
