Thanks for everybody's post on which reel I should get. Quick question though, are the spools interchangeable between the Shimano Spirex (front drag), Sahara and/or Stradic (assuming all of the same class size)?
I really liked my old Spirex reels, but they were rear drag models and the spools no longer matched the newer released models. But I also like the instant anti-drag of the Sahara/Stradic, was hoping I could swap around spools. Thanks.
Nope, WIsh you could though, but you cant.
I swap spools between all my front drag 2000 size shimano reels, seems to work for me. Mine are all symmetre and spirex, but I suspect that it would work on the other 2000 size front drag reels.

I have 2000 models/front drag of the Sahara, Sedona, Stradic, and Symetre, all seem to be interchangeable.

FYI ... I have found that the interchangability does not go both ways on the Stradic spools. The others you mentioned will work on the Stradic, but the aluminum spool for the Stradic is a smaller diameter and will not work on all models (Symetre for example).

Another thing you will find is that spools are not necessarily exchangeable Stradic to Stradic. I have both a 2000FE and a 2000FG. The spool was changed for the 2000FG and though you can put it on the FE, it will rub and not work properly. There also was some difference even on others, Spirex for instance. Though an older spool will go on, doesn't mean the line will wind on evenly. If you match them closely height for height, they will generally work as long as they are front drag spools.

I found the same thing between the FE and the FG Stradic.
I had a few older Spirex Reels approx 6-7 years old.. I noticed the New Model Spirex Reels (The ones that say "FLuiddrive" on the side come with spools that when you put them next to the old spools are slightly different.. They all fit on any reel. The bottom section of the new spirex spools where the line capacity is listed is slightly taller.. Do any reel repair guys know if swapping spools will cause problems? I have and not noticed any short term difference..
I posted this about a year ago and did not get a solid answer

Seems to be alot of confusion about this. I have a Sahara and a Stradic, 2000 size. All spools interchange fine. The aluminum spool is a much better spool however. LOL
