I have always wondered this and now am going to get all of your opinions out there. What is more important in a depthfinder, more pixels or higher watts of power? For my situation, I will be fishing almost exclusively in bodies of water under 25 feet, if that makes any difference. I just purchased a Lowrance X-51 for my trolling motor that has 240x160 pixels, but has 1500 watts of power. The person I was working with stated that because of the pixels, this finder will be better than my X-65 I have on the back of my boat. Is he right or is he just blowing smoke up my a$$?

Sorry for the long post, but thanks in advance for your insight!!

Both Watts and Pixels are nice to have on a unit. You can never have too clear of a screan, while u can have too much power. I talked to the sales rep for Furuno at the Cleveland boat show because i was deciding on either the 600L or the 582 fish finders. He described a transducer for a fishfinder as being an underwater speaker. The more watts that you put to it the louder it is because higher wattage is needed to reach greater depth. And this is how your fishy finder works off the echo when it hits bottom. So say you went shootin off a 1000 watt sounder in 10' of water. Fish can pick up the vibrations from your transducer so this loud noise could actully spook fish.

If your using it in say 50' or less probaly the X65 or the new X71 has the wattage (188 watt unit) to get a great reading. In my opinion the X85 or the new X91 is a very good unit because it has plenty of power without overkill (375watt unit) and has a nice clear 240X240 display, so really that is the one id want.

For anywhere that your not gettin deeper than say 300' you really dont need more than 375watts.

Furuno 600L is a 350watt unit and i know that is the next fish finder i will be buying.

In 25 foot or less...pixels over watts would be my choice.
