Hey Ive been looking for a newer boat for some time now, and it seems that Mercury has dropped the 150 EFI 2 stroke....... Is this true? From my own research Ive mostly seen that the EFI 2 stroke out performs the optimax. It looks like it's faster and better hole shot than optmax, but it was more polluting and louder than the opti. I'm really confused about this so please correct me if I'm wrong on anything!

Merc no longer makes the EFI. You are correct that the 150EFI comparred to a 150Opti is faster. But the EFI is a gas hog comparred to the Opti.

here's a pretty fresh looking 150EFI XL, if you need a 25" motor.

Thanks john, do you know what the differences are between the efi 2 stroke and the optimax?

Lots of differences, but biggest is opti will use less fuel and oil. We have 97 150efi and it has been bulletproof. I would not be afraid of this motor, and really I would not call it a gas hog, only if you are comparing it to newer more fuel efficient motors, then yes it is :) But we don't think it hits us too bad in the pocket book at the gas station.
Good luck, both good choices.

In a nut shell, EFI is electronic Fuel Injected. Opti is a HPDI or High Pressue Direct Injection.
Google up "Optimax vs EFI" and you will find plenty to read about the topic.
And yes the gas hog comment was a comparrison to new motors. Same could be said when comparing the old XR-6 to the EFI. And I also agree that the Merc 150 in both the EFI and Optimax are pretty much bullet proof motors.
