Just wondering what you guys would think the advantages or disadvantages of one verses the other. It will go on a 1725 ProGuide. Thanks in advance!
I want to add that this is not a thread to bash or praise either motor, I think they are both great motors but I will be putting an order in for a new boat next week and just wanted to know the differences.
Thanks!

If you're putting onto a tiller, I'd definitely go with the Yamaha. The tiller handle has the VTS so you can lock in your RPM's. Very nice feature. Assuming you get some hard runs in on your breakin period (avoiding "making oil" syndrome), you should be able to troll all day long at a lower speed than the Etec. I have the Yam 75 EFI 4S side console on my 1625 Lund and it's awesome. I was somewhat worried about the low end punch of this motor coming from a previous two stroke. Turns out there was nothing to be concerned about. Fantastic motor. This spring went to start it up for the first time and it fired within 1 second like it just started an hour ago.
Etec would have more power out of the hole and would be noticably lighter. Better for pulling a skiier and slightly better weight distribution. There are some good advantages to Etec's though. It was my second choice and only other motor in serious consideration.

you should be able to troll all day long at a lower speed than the Etec. .
Actually the E-TEC can troll slower than 600 rpm while the F75 Yamaha has a 700-750 rpm idle speed.

and you can skip that break-in period.

Actually the E-TEC can troll slower than 600 rpm while the F75 Yamaha has a 700-750 rpm idle speed.
The published Yamaha adjustable trolling speed range using VTS or Command Link control is 550 to 1000 rpm for the F75 or F90.
My Yamaha F90 without VTS or Command Link idles about 610 or 620 rpm.
So you can get an etec that doesn't need VTS because they all idle at 500 rpms to troll down. There is no break in period. They are lighter and have a lot less moving parts to worry about. Oiling problems?? Plus they also winterize themselves so less time and money doing maintenance.

I know that I will get bashed for this but if you are going to use your motor for trolling get the Yamaha 4st.I have the 75 E-Tec and have not had a lot of luck trolling with it ended up buying a kicker. They idle at 630rpm and that's after i had it ajusted. It was going through plugs rather fast to when I did troll with it.But if you just need the motor to get you to point a to point b I would go with the E-Tec starts great even in very cold weather and has great hole shot FOR A 75hp.You might think about a Suzuke also I have read they idle down realy slow.

DrummerBoy,
You must have an older 75 E-TEC as the ignition system and spark plug type changed in 2008 and they will troll all day, every day without wear or fouling of the plugs.
Even with the older type engines, spark plug problems were usually caused by the thermostat or blow-off valve which would not allow the motor to warm up. There are also longer deflector pins that are easily installed that help too. There is a dealer service bulletin that explains how to test and fix the idle temp on your engine.
Talk to a knowledgeable dealer, and if they don't know, ask them to call their dealer "hot line" and talk to a factory tech who can inform them.

If you are trolling a lot get the 4 stroke. I had a 3 cylinder etec and it left the back of my boat for a 90 johnzuki. My dealer was honest and made a huge mistake selling me an etec. Trolling Lake Michigan for 4-6 hours at a time killed plugs and being the last boat out on the big pond running home on 2 cylinders just wasn't safe anymore. My dad also has a 90 etec. Needless to say it has had a lot of problems....recall, tilt/trim unit and a engine computer. Also these etecs don't charge for $hit. I know they are rated well, I think 40 amps? Both of ours didn't charge well at all. Also fellow etec guys how come I gained 3-4mph with my 100lb heavier Zuki? THERE is NO REPLACEMENT for DISPLACEMENT!
