how do you know? how do you know it's even fish for sure and then how do you know it's walleye. Not trying to be a S.A. just curious.

We call the fish "Ghosts" :phatyo: Like a Flashlight shadow = fish. Then cath them to Verify, I drove through Missouri, so show me what they are:frypan:

I'm sorry, that may be a fish, but I don't see a name tag on it :-)

Nice, very nice. You can tell what side of the boat the fish are on which is a big plus. I am going to have to play around with mine some more. Pretty cold water...
Now if you could overlay the GPS waypoints on the SI image that would keep me from switching back and forth.

Joby;
Thank You for posting! I own a 997SI and have several questions, how do you determine the best SI width to depth settings, what is the ideal frequency for 5 to 30 ft and 40 to 100 ft.
Thanks Mike

The only frequency I run mine on is 455 kHz for side imaging. If you will take a look at all of the snap shots we take the images are taken are around 100 feet on both sides. Just for me searching I run mine on 125 feet on both sides. Then when I see something I will move my range down to 90 to 100 feet. You get a better picture the lower your range is. Side imaging will narrow your time for searching for fish or structure.

2D sonar doesnt have a name tag option either, but for the most part, if youre catching walleyes, what you are seeing is walleyes.
I took that screencpture that Joby posted. It was done with a friends 1197 that I had in my boat for testing. I did not mess with the settings, and agree, that it is not the best shot. But, I can tell you that they are fish, and indeed walleyes.
Heres a shot from my 997. Also, more walleyes.
Take a good look at the shape of the shadow of the fish on the right side of the boat, across from the date.
Now, heres where it gets tough. Heres a school of 3 automobiles, I couldnt tell if they were Fords, Chevies, Plymouths, or a mixed school, because I couldnt get them up once I hooked into them.

What's the story behind the vehicles on the bottom? Did they go through the ice or something?
Just curious.
Another question... but, off topic, I know.... I thought when vehicles went down, they had to be removed at the cost of the owner? Or, have these three been down there so long, that it was before that law was ever put in place?

I usually set my SI distance = to the In-line Planer Boards.
If I am searching Structure I may even move them to 50' to get better detail or zoom if i find Better Structure to detail or even just one side to the shore to get a bigger screen shot.
If Lucky and the water is clean a camera can be lowered too.

Juls,
Heres the skinny as far as I know.
The location is Lake Sharpe, which Im pretty sure you and I had some conversation about in the chat room prior to you coming out to fish a tournament several years ago. You know how desolate it is out there.
These vehicles were off to the side of a road(now submerged) in the vicinity of the the town on Lower Brule, prior to the reservoir being filled back in the 50s.
I believe that they "left" alot of things out there to be covered with water, but even still when I went over these vehicles, I was surprised that they were simply left out there.

Joby;Have you tried running a large crankbait behind a planner board or another boat and graphed it on the SI?If so,what did you see? What difference will the salt water setting show over fresh water?Do you have screen photos where you are near the shore\bank,ie, boat in 30 ft to the shore 50 ft away?
Thanks Mike

Dodges... Back in the 50's their engines flooded easily like that :smirk:.
I've had a 1197 W/QuadraBeam option on the water since last spring, & I love it.
One problem I'm having though is the unit shutting itself off in very rough water when I hit a big wave. I have the retainer on the wires on the back of the unit, but it seems as though the connections should be tighter (more friction) between the plugs and the receiver pins on the back of the unit.

Red Dog,
Love the shot of the three cars. You can even see the doors are open.

Larry,
Those cars are out off Lower Brule in South Dakota.
Since I got you here, I gotta tell you that the guys that mapped Lake Sharpe in South Dakota deserve a raise! It is incredibly accurate! Unbelieveably accurate to me.
When everyone gets used to Side Imaging, then Ill let you know the real feature Humminbird has that truly puts fish in the boat! The ability to set the shaded depths. That feature alone, has put way more fish in the boat this season than any other feature! It just keeps getting better and better.
