I recently booked a four day canoe trip in the Boundry Waters Canoe area. I am going in just outside of Grand Marais,MN. The trip is scheduled for May 30- June 2. I would like any info specific to this area and time of year anyone may have. There are several outfitter sites that have very general info> I'm looking for suggestions on bait, depth, structure, you know the good stuff for my particular trip.Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

JPB,
I have done some guiding in this area, please send a private email to bbaker@cloquet.k12.mn.us I will share as much information as I can, it would help me if you could send which lakes you will be on, and if your looking for a bunch of eaters or a chance at a trophy.

Look for dark mud bays with down timber 8-12ft. use leeches with slip bobber. Narrows with curent are good, use a jig natural colors. Always bobber humps 5-12ft.at dusk.Take care of your bait, uses big leeches, smallmouth like them too.

I have not been up there for a while and do not remmeber fishing any of those lakes. We spent most of our time on Crooked but did fish the lakes coming and going.
What we learned after a few trips up with portable locators is to only fish the points and mid lakes humps. We marked and caught few fish trolling shoreline structure in between points on most of the lakes we fished.
The bait we used the most was a #7 deep diving perch colored shad rap. We would just braced the rod between you legs and trolled the points. Another good bait was a #13 deep diving jointed Rapala, gold and black.
When we found a hump or a point that extended way out into the lake we would marked and vertically jig it. Take some rope and make an anchor out of a rock if you need to. We caught pike, walleye and smallmouth both trolling and jigging.
For smallmouth the best bait I ever had up there was a Cotton Cordell Rattlin Redfin - blue and silver or blue and white. Cast that around shallow rocky areas and hang on. We had six fish over six pounds one day alone.

Good luck. It is a great trip.
