OK,I have a 23 ft. alum. boat ,need to reduce trolling speed.
I have seen boats at Erie trolling more with a sea anchor out
the back than on the side. Anyone on this board have any
thoughts as what would be the best way? Any idea how large a bag I would need? I am at 3mph would like to slow to 2.0 or less.
Thanks In Advance.

I used to use a big (40") sock of the stern on a 26' boat I had, but it was a real pain. lures/fish getting into it and little boat control in wind/turns. I switched to one sock of each side and made a big differnce. Currently , I have a 19' aluminum, with a 120hp I/O. While I dont fish Erie with it, I still use two trolling bags, one on either side. I use the 24" ones and It will get me pretty slow. Probably go with 30" for yours. I got mine from Cabela's.

I agree with a bag out the back. It tends to get in the way. One off each sides is the best. I tried off the front but it screwed up my electronics.
Something that worked very well for me for a few years was using two 3 or 5 gallon buckets out the back. You just drill 6 holes, 2 on each side across from each other and 2 in the bottm in line with the side holes. Weave a rope through the holes and attach a clip. Keep the ropes short so the buckets are only a foor or so off the back of the boat. This is a very cheap and effective way to slow your boat down. I used it to slow a 100 down to as much as .5 mph.
The one downfall is storing the buckets when you are not using them.

Good luck,
scott

I use 1 or 2 bags depending on weather and spped desired. 25' boat - bags on side. For your money the best bag i have found is at www.amishoutfitters.com , a quality bag at a great price.
