Finished hookin up my new 917c today and hit the water for about an hour just to check it out. Here are some pros and cons

PROs
1-The colors are AWESOME and easy to see
2-size, i like a wide screen over a tall screen
3-seemed easy and quick enough to adjust all of the normal settings

Cons
1- the gps wire on the back of the unit fell out twice, no locking mech
2- Installing the ducer. its a pain
3-?

Granted, this is my first outing so I am sure both lists will grow. But so far so good. I do have to raise my transducer up, it is shooting a monster rooster tail! It would be great if some of you humminbird guys could clue me into some of the other cool features HB has in their units. I have been reading the ownersmanual nonstop but I always mis something:frypan:

I am glad you liked the unit.

As far as the gps falling out of the back of the unit. There should have been a connector collector in the box that all of the wires attach into and then it will attach to the unit. I would double check the box and make sure it is not in there and if you can not find it call our customer service department and they will get one out to you. Our toll free number is 800-633-1468.

Don't adjust your transducer to make the water spray go away, adjust your transducer til it perform's best. From what I've read and heard from other owners, the rooster tail is here to stay. Some WC guys are doing their own fab work to come up with solutions for it but it's pretty much just the "nature of the beast"...If you adjust your ducer to make the "tail" go away you may wind up with a ducer that doesn't work optimally...That would make no sense?
Anyhow, I thought rooster tails were cool??? Maybe it's HB's way to distinguish its users from all the others on the water..
Sounds like limited mapping options may be a "con" as well with the HB units, I'll have to learn more about them.

Does anyone know what the weather option (not sure what its called) cost per month to subscribe to? Or do any of you have it in your boats? What are your thoughts? That would be a sweet option.

Like Joby says, there's a plastic piece that all the cables go into so it's just one connection at the unit. The collector has a thumb screw which then holds the assembly to the unit. Did you miss that step in the owners manual? I've got a roostertail from the xducer on my 931C, but it's the first unit I've never lost a bottom signal at speed with.

I found the piece for the hook ups on back of the unit. Thanks, HB is also sending me a peice to take care of the roostertail..free of charge. I was told ny another WC member that the rooster tail is caused by a design flaw and HB is sending out a piece to install that will take care of it.

I also have the 917, and have been using it four about one month. It is a great unit. I love it. As far as the rooster tail, I also had the same thing. Thanks to all the guys on this site, I was able to take care of all of it. This is what I did. Quick fix--black electrical, wrap it around the hole on the bracket of the transducer. That stopped ALL of my spary. I did not think thatwas going to stay on, it's still on there after one month of running. I am in the water more than not >LOL Then I called HB, and they sent me out a kit. left the tape on then put the kit on. NO SPRAY AT ALL. very nice unit. If you have any queations about the unit, I am no pro but have spent alot of time going through all the screens and options of this unit. I can try to help you.

Good luck and good fishin :smash:

I still have the bottom after tapping it, did you move it up. If so, try moving it back down.

I have the little rubber piece and it helps but I still have some tail. Never thought that I would be complaining about having tail in my boat!

I have a piece of tape over the hole for now and it helped ALOT, but the ducer keeps popping out so it doesnt read. If it stays down I keep bottom at all speeds. Any of you have this prop of the ducer poppin up? I just snap it back down

Anyone else ever have issues with the ducer poppin up when driving and having to pop it back into place? The pics are in the post below. Thanks

Screw it down. That is what the hole is for above the ducer in the mount. It will never pop up again.

Just wondering if any of you know how to make the way points bigger on the screen. On my new 917 the way points are small and hard to read, I could make them bigger on my 788ci but cant seem to on the 917. I also have a 788ci and was wondering if there is a way to put different readings such as speed and temp on other screens that I typically use more often?

teamlund,

Did you get your lowrance unit back from lowrance yet? I did and I still have problems.

I can't begin to tell you how frustrating it is to spend $1000 to have a unit that does not function.

Please keep in mind the replacement they sent me they said was fully tested to not have any issues.

Why can they not fix the problem??????????????????????????????????????????? ???

I sent the unit to them and have not gotten it back. That is why lowrance has lost a customer. I felt the same way. You spend 1000 dollars on a unit and the **** thing cant function correctly. I had another unit two years ago that was a PITA.....So far I am loving my humminbird and will be looking for a unit for my bowmount to replace the lowrance that is there. Even though the lowrance on my bowmount works fine I like the colors on the humminbird WAY MORE, much easier to see at any and all directions.:).......

I can tell you our products are rock solid. If you get a unit for the bow don't forget about the Interlink box that connect the units together so you can share waypoints between the two units.

I love the "snapshop" feature on my humminbird. I use it all the time. You cant watch the graph all the time so when you get a fish hit the "mark" key and you can go back agter you reeled in your catch and delt with it. Check your info, speed, depth, course, all kinds of info and it has an actual pic of your screen when you caught the fish! It great, I use it all the time trolling:howdy:

I really like my Humminbirds, switched over last year fully after my 2 Lowarnce units started to give up on me at the same time, after you use them for bit and get use to how they function they are sweet.

What more can you ask for I can see my slip sinker and the leech in 30+' of water.

The interlink function is awsome if you have a unit on the bow and dash.
