What do you guys think is the best hook sharpener ?
Those diamond sticks with a grove in them.

I use my Dremel and a light touch with a fine stone.

For me the best one I/ve ever found is DMT - KatchKey. It's just a blank key with 2 groves in it. There impregnated with diamond dust. One slot is bigger, thus your larger sized hooks. Very handy cause it's on the key ring so you don't loose it. I HOPE ANYWAY. I'm a big time hook sharpner using them many, many times daily and I haven't worn em out yet. Hutch

Boaters world sells a retractable diamond groove and flat side for filing. It also has a pocket lasp and is all aluminium. It uses an adusting clamp down threaded nut for locking and is made in the U.S.A :) $5.99 forget what brand it is but it does not fallout of my pocket or bibs. Diamond honed with a slot are pretty slick in the dark also gives you some "guidance" when you really need it. BPS sell a smaller diamond hone that looks like a pen gives people a grin when they want to borrow your "pen" Ahh? what is this, its a what? Ohh I should have figured that! It's you! Loaned it to many a stranger asking for a pen also.

I like to use emery boards to sharpen my hooks. They are cheap, work great, easy to store and are a great alternative. I found this idea in a fishing magazine.

I have used all of the above types and have to agree that they all do a fine job. I now carry a Leatherman Micra that has a VERY rough nail file and it sharpens as well if not better than anything else I've used. In my boat I have strategically placed emery boards, although not the paper ones. I have found some made with a rubbery insides and they last even after getting wet.

Anyone ever try one of those battery operated sharpeners? I've always been skeptical of them doing a better job than the ol' file.

I just purchased one of the new "Cone Hones" from Cabellas. I don't think that I like it. First of all you can't get smaller hooks into the darn thing and second, it's supposed to give a conical point to your hook and so far it just doesn't seem to work. It didn't come with any directions, hints or anything, I think I'll try the Dremel tool Idea or just go back to my file. My advice, save your money onm the Cone Hone!!!

I like the emery boards too, razor sharp tip in seconds, cheap and easy. To sides for coarse and fine.

I too like the diamond - groove jobbies, also have one of the Berkley line removers - has a stone like a cheap Dremel - use it a lot, actually got 2 for free and gave one to a friend - but the diamond will touch one up real quick.
I remember reading somewhere (In Fish - or Bassmaster) of a ceramic one that was real good for 5.00 - but never adle to find one.

The best one I have used was recommended by the guys on this board. It is a diamond sharpener made by EZE-lab. Shaped like a ball point pen, has a "v" shaped grove to run the hook down. I used to use the kind with two small round metal files and that was ok but this one sharpens size 2-8 in 2-4 strokes.
Here is the link to Cabels: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jhtml?id=0000264111292a&navAction=jump&navCount=0&indexId=&podId=0000264&catalogCode=IC&parentId=&parentType=
good luck.

The best one I ever had was the finger nail file I "borrowed" from my wife years ago. All metal, never rusted, and after years of use still put a point on that would bury in my fingernail.I am a fanatic about sharp hooks! Sometimes I touch them up every other cast on the river. Takes seconds but I don't what to miss that one bite I might get all night. But sad to say last week it was about 34degress with a 20mph wind and my hands were real cold and while touching up the hook point of my jig I dropped it in the river. So the next day I went to the Meijers store to try and find a replacement.I didn't know where to start.[Kind of felt funny browsing around the perfume, makeup, hair products ect.]But I finally found the files. Bought a Revlon,[according to my wife, best there is]with a plastic end. This time I drilled a hole in the plastic end and put it on my lanyard with my jig buster and clippers. No joke, these work great for touching up hooks while fishing. They are only about $2.59 ea. I have them in all my tackle boxes. I have no confidence in a dull hook. For more serious sharpening at home I use a fine metal file that you can get at GM for $5.99. Good Luck and sharp hooks.
