View Full Version : Wire or Power Pro
Hey Dipsey Divers, what would you use on your dipsey diver rod line counter reels, wire line or power pro? And if wire would you use single strand or sevenstrand?
Thanks Pete

Good question Pete. I'll be curious as to what some of the local guys here have to say on this one. For me, fishing the Central basin. For the past several years I've used the Power Pro and have no complaints what-so-ever. I also use the steel line as well. In years past I've used Almet 304 stainless as well as just plain Almet wire. I've also used Monel. They have all worked, but for me anyway weren't the most user friendly. As you'd expect it gets you deeper with less line. Now last season I got some new 7 strand SS wire from Riviera. Larry told me to try it. Sorry but I don't know the name of it as I bought it in bulk from him. Anyway, it was very user friendly!!! Held up to the steelies with no probelms. I've already ordered this years supply. Enough to go on 6 rods. I'm gonna have 6 other rods with my Power Pro and do a serious comparison between the two this season. Bottom line for me is I don't think I'd go out there without both of em. Love my wire on the horses, that's for sure. Just my 2 cents worth. Hutch

Hutch,
What kind of rods are you running for the wire and can you or anyone else post a link to a site that sells them? I can't seem to find anybody between Toledo and Cleveland that knows anything about wire set ups.

ezmarc until the year before last I ran the steel lines rods with the roller guides that are made by Fenwick. There ok but kinda heavy and no real fighting action to the rods. Year before last I was talking to my rep at Triple-S and we got to talking about wire line. He talked me into trying some Twili-Tip. You can use this on any type of a fishing rod, any type. In my case there either 10 foot St. Croix or 9 foot T.D.R. Shimano dipsy rods. The tip really looks kinda cheap but has worked perfectly for me in the last 2 seasons. It comes with several different sized inserts so you can match the diameter of your rod tip. You heat up your rods tip and take the original tip off. Then take some rod tip glue and glue on the Twili. On the end of it is a spring that starts out small and works it's way to about maybe 3/16 I.D. Like I said it looks a bit different but works like a dream. I can take the same rod and run, mono, superline or wire and it works perfect. YOU DO NOT HURT ANY OF THE OTHER EYES regaurdless if your running wire, mono or Powere Pro. Last year in the Central Basin we did not fare so well on the eyes but sure did catch a lot of steelies. EVERYONE of my rods that ran the steel line with the Twili-Tips are in perfect shape, that is eyes anyway. Anyway, that's what I use and will continue till I find something better. Got any question don't hesitate to reply back or you can holler at me privately. Hutch jigman@mhtc.net 608-326-6764

Thanks Hutch!
I'm not that into wire, but I'd lilke to know what everyone thinks is the depth that wire becomes worth the effort. (that is depth of presentation / not depth of water)
My guess would be 65', as I'm pretty comfortable with my ability to achieve that depth with Power Pro.
More sun, more sun, more sun!!!!

Marc,
Ditto what Hutch said on the Twirli Tip. I have two wire Dipsey setups that I bought for going to Lake Ontario Salmon/Steelhead fishing. The wire brand is "Malin" multiple strand. Don't really know the details on the actual wire. I bought the setups from the best salmon/steelhead troller I know, Frank Kittrick - YKnot. I run them on 8 1/2 foot Okuma Dipsey Rods which is the same I use for all my dipseys with braided line. I use the same gear on Lake Erie and Ontario. He runs the Twirli tips and fishes more than anyone I know. If they are good enough to withstand the use he puts on them they are definitely good enough for me.

I ran 16lb Williams single strand and 30lb Power Pro last year and I did a test with the dipseys on a straight dive plane . I found the two lines dove about the same when we would bang them off bottom in 70 feet of water. About 180 feet back would hit bottom.

Jim,
I don't think it was depth that mattered so much as length of line out and the sensivity of the wire. I'm talking 300+ feet back with cranks or harnesses in the gin clear water east of Cleveland.

Yep your sure right there ezmarc. Last year one of our best ticket for the big girls seem to be 350 feet back on the wire. Deep little rippers off the horses with four rubber bands. It's the only way we could detect a bite. They just graped it and swam with us. But man it sure was a pain bringing em in. Beleive me I tried every possible combination to duplicate that recipe so we wouldn't have to have SO MUCH LINE OUT. All I know is that was one of our best tickets last year. Hutch

Ditto. 300 feet back off Port Colbourne with 30 Power Pro was hot last year.Had no trouble detecting bites though . Wonder what we were doing different?
neither, fireline. You are much better fishing the suspended fish. I fished all summer over 72 ft of water. I ran my lures at 40ft, at the deepest 50ft. THat is my opinion.

Opinion noted, but we were catching fish 10 feet off the bottom in 85 feet of water.
