I am in the market for a portable fish finder to use on a trip to Canada this summer. Can anyone give me any tips on what type and where I might find one of these?. Also due they work very well or are they a waste of money

Actually, you can use any fish finder if you have one. Make a small box, get a small motorcycle battery, and a suction cup for the transducer, and your all set! I cant imaging fishing a strange body of water without one!

I agree with everything Reels says except the suction cup for the transducer. The suction cups do not hold very well. I found that a clamp on style transducer mount works much better. You can find them at Cabela's.

I would consider them more "depth finder" than "fish finders" but they work great for finding structure, drop-offs, weeds, etc. I also wouldn't go north without one. If you haven't been before, you'll find that you can't begin to estimate depths on those lakes. Sometimes you'll be 1/2 mile from shore and there'll be a mound of rocks that comes up to within a few feet of the surface but the water all around is 40' deep. You'll find holes, drop-offs, etc. holding fish that you would never find without a depthfinder.
You should be able to get a decent one for about $125 that will do what you need, especially on a fly-in.
Gander Mountain sells an Eagle - Fish Easy 2 for 159.00. I asked about this unit here and everyone who replyed said nothing but good things about it. I think I am going to get one. Good Luck

If you do any ice fishing at all consider a Vexilar portable setup. With your handle, I doubt you do, though!!

I have a Humminbird Wide 100 that I converted into a portable unit using a field box that I'd let go pretty reasonably. All you would need is power (gel cell, motorcycle battery, etc) and a suction cup or clamp to make it totally portable. E-mail me at sovik_marc_s@lilly.com if interested.

Check out the Vexilar-Boundry Waters - light, very small footprint - good resolution and great sensitivity - runs on AA batts - sweet unit - loved it last Summer up there - was using an old Hummingbird and that was good for depth only really - no more lantern batts!

The Boundary Waters Vexilar is a very good choice for a lightweight user-friendly unit.
Check out http://www.vexilar.com/lc-10.html for full details on the unit.
