flat salted minnows????

I've been searching and reading all of the recipes on here for salting your own minnows so I decided to give it a try. I used the borax/salt mix and layered the minnows in a bucket for 24 hours. When I took them out they were awfully flat. Is this normal? I mean, they are still flexible and shiny but REALLY thin. Did I leave them in too long or will they still work?

The salt draws the moisture from the minnows. Thick head, skinny body is the norm for me (typically, I use pickling salt). The fish don't seem to mind the skinny look, however.
