I need to upgrade my fishfinder. I am prety much sold on the Garmin 240.

But I am also considering a new handheld WAIS GPS (Garmin Venture). This got me thinking about perhaps getting the Garmin 168. A bit pricey, but perhaps worth the money.

Any opinions on the 168. What I am questioning most is the combined unit. I am wondering if I should just wait until next year to upgrade the GPS, and at that time get something like the Garmin 162.

Is it better to have two separate units, at least for the resolution that I am talking about here?

Thanks.

Ran a 168 on Lake Fork in Texas in January...my first time on the water. This is a mine-field of trees and the boat lanes were perfectly marked. Ran across the water (27,000 acres) with a clear screen, easy to read on the console.

Marked a bunch of 10# bass on the split screen. A unit well worth the investment.

I had a similar post a couple of days ago and a couple of guys came up with a concern I hadn't thought about. Foremost was what would happen if you had a problem with either the sounder or the GPS. You lose the both units while waiting for repairs. Believe I'm going with separate units.

That is one of my concerns as well. A bit more money, but I may go separate as well.
