View Full Version : Motorguide Trolling Motor
I was wondering if anyone has had problems with the motorguide Lazer ES trolling motors. I have had my share with this motor. The motor would not steer and I sent it in for repairs, the motor they sent me back did the same thing. I have checked all parts of the battery and plug and everything is good. I'am wondering if I'am doing something wrong. When I put the motor in the gator mount does the head have to be set in a certain position? Any advice? I don't want to start a Minnkota - Motorguide war, just some help.

Checking electrical connections is always first. If you pull off the top of the motor, you can test for proper voltage at the motor with a voltmeter. I am assuming 24V is what you have. If you have 23-26V at the motor, then you either have a board problem in the head or something with the footpedal or cable. If you don't have 24V at the motor, start going back to the cable, battery connections, etc. Does the ES normally beep when you give it a command? Does the head respond to any commands at all? (On, off, etc).
These motors have a history of steering problems I wouldn't advise sticking with that style of motorguide motors.
I agree with Hump. Mine has been to the shop and the factory. Shop stated that virtually all have come in for warranty work. When mine stops steering, I pull the motor out of the water and let it sit for two minutes. I then set it back in the water and it starts working again. Never will buy another Motor Guide.

When I got mine there was a video and specificinstructions on how to put it in .
I remember having to set the rack inside the motor in a special position.
Try their web site or if you are any where near Milwaukee give Anchors Aweigh in Waukasha a call, they are a super service centeer and very good .
As far as trouble I've really had none, been beating it up on Winnebago and Green Bay for two years.
JLOBRN are you talking about a electric steering or cable drive. If you have used a electric alot in two years you are lucky it still works. I went through three in four months two cordless and one with a cord. I think there a peace of ####. Well you get the picture.

I have a lazer es that is truly a piece of crap also. took it in to a factory authorized dealer for repairs. was doing the same steering thing as yours and he says it's the foot control. He also stated that they discontinued that foot control and the new one is $225. The bleepin thing aint worth that. I then asked how many of these he's had in for repair. He darn near died laughing. Then told me you don't even want to know. I told him to keep it and went and bought a minkota.

I used to have a Lazer 370ES. Stripped the slip clutch out, sent it into the authorized repair facility. They fixed it and I stripped the the slip clutch again in about three weeks. They fixed it again with the new improved rubber slip clutch which I promptly ruined the first week from hitting a stump. I got so i could take that motor apart in my sleep. I called Motorguide and told them that I fish alot and that I no longer wanted that motor because the electric steer wouldn't stand up to hard use and that if they didn't do something I was going to throw it into the lake 'cuz it was more valuable as fish structure than as a trolling motor. They agreed to replace my motor with a new cablesteer motor(which has been great) at no cost to me. I was extremely pleased with Motorguide the company but not with the Lazer. Call Motorguide and give them a chance to make it right.
I went with a pinpoint it works OK.
