What is the best line to use on slip bobbers?

My personal preference is a limp 6lb mono. To me slip bobbers are a finesse presentation so a light line is a given. If I fished areas where the water was clearer, I might even go lighter.

I also use 6LB test.... I prefer 6lb trilene XL.... It has worked great for me for years.

i use a mono main line and a two foot fluoro leader on the bottom. my set-up: bobber stop, small glass bead, bobber, swivel, two foot fluoro leader (4-6lb), and hook. i uses different presentations for my hooks. read Greg Bohn's book Master the art of slip bobbering.

I like fireline for the main line (as it floats and won't cause underwater slack in the main line) with a flouro leader below a swivel .

15 pound power prt to a swivel with 10 pound floucarbon is what i use with a tight drag. I use this set up on DL when gettign them big fish out of the branches fast is a must.

If I may "bob" in here for a moment :>) ,
Open shallow clear water = 6-8 # mono - long casts to target 30 yards or more. Also consider short cast and floating bait to target with the wind.
Deep edege of weeds = 8-10# mono - shorter casts.
In rocks - 10-14# mono. Cast length depends on depth.
Stick-ups - 14-20 mono, etc..
Deep (20-40+ feet) verticle presentations 10-20# flouro.
In the thick of it (whatever) 20 pound staright mono, oro 50 pound braid with 20 pound mono leader.
You can also use heavier line anywhere on dark days or any other low light presentation.
For those who might be interested in debunking the qualities of flouro, please refer to:

There is 4 parts to this study - some boring - some very interesting. Page down for parts 1 & 2, then - part 4 is yet to come.
How visible is SpiderWire Stealth compared to any Mono or Flouro?
6lb Stealth is 1lb test diameter.

I've pretty much replaced all my mono with Gamma Copolymer, I like everything about that line - knot strength, stretch, line handling properties, etc. I think copoly or mono is the way to go for slip bobbers.
I don't like fireline or power pro for bobber fishing because the bobber knots slide easily on those lines, and the extra sensitivity you get with those lines isn't needed for bobber fishing. Although the guys that are fishing around timber have a good reason to use it, so they can horse the fish away from the trees.
I don't like flouro for slip bobbers because the line sinks --- using a flouro leader between your hook and main line is a good idea especially in clear water ---- but don't use flouro as your main line for slip bobbers.

I prefer a mainline of 10# PowerPro..then goes the knot, then bead, then a Thill Pro-float(really hands down the best), appropriate sized egg sinker to balance, then a barrel swivle and finally between 2-3 feet of 8# flourocarbon leader material followed by the hook or jighead to match the offering. Maybe a small splitshot on the flouro but I usually like to keep it clean and free of weight below the swivle.
The PowerPro shoots through the bobber and the flourocarbon does double duty by not only being 'invisible' but more importantly just stiff enough to hamper tangles. I agree that a flouro mainline would be a terrible choice. It sinks and makes all of the line between the rod and the bob difficult to pick up when a bite happens.
On my lakes slipbobbering is an absolute mainstay from June through August and this setup has worked great for me. Another little trick, I'm sure almost everyone does this anyway, is to use an ice fishing style depth check. Just hook that on boat side and deepsix your bobber. If it takes the float a foot under then that is how high off the bottom your presentation is.
disbeliever,
they do make 1lb test line. Cabela's has some leader material that is 1 lb test.
Also, the line I was talking about is 6 lb test with a 1 pound test diameter.
Go to cabelas.com and look up Maxima line. They have spools of 1 lb test leader material.
